I guess it could be seen as a little bit of a stretch to call it a new striker as such but as news broke on Monday about Rangers seemingly ending their interest in Morgan Whittaker it was as close to a new striker as we have seen in the window so far.
It now looks as if Whittaker will remain at Swansea come the end of today which is as good as a new striker in the team following his recall from Plymouth Argyle earlier in the month.
Whittaker has had an exceptional first half of the season at Home Park and whilst the recall was seemingly to see if we could cash in on that excellent form it now seems that, barring any last minute moves, Whittaker will potentially be available for selection for Saturday’s game against Birmingham City.
Rangers manager Michael Beale stated yesterday that he believed Whittaker would be staying at Swansea as he spoke to the press ahead of his side’s visit to Hearts this midweek.
“He will be staying at Swansea, I believe,” said Beale as he talked about potential transfer targets with other targets still “No closer” according to the Rangers boss.
Russell Martin spoke two weeks back about how he believed that Whittaker could be available for selection at QPR but he did not travel with the squad with speculation suggesting that he had turned his phone off when the club were trying to contact him.ย ย That much is rumour and heresay but Martin himself spoke after the draw at QPR and said that Whittaker was not in the right frame of mind to play.
With Michael Obafemi now at Burnley, Martin must decide what to do regards Whittaker assuming that Beale is right and he does stay at Swansea post the transfer window.ย Will he bring him straight into the squad for the Birmingham fixture or give it a few more days to let matters settle down and the player to focus on fitness and the norm before bringing him fully into the frame.
Either way if Morgan can find the form that he was displaying at the top end of League One then the Swans have a new striker on their hands and a potentially very good one at that.
And that is all we ever ask?
Iโm delighted .It seems to me that there are 2 important factors here .Donโt build him up too much and letโs hope that Russell Martin gives him a fair chance.
Wyn Johns โฆ we know neither is likely!
If he gets a decent chance I hope he has the character to knuckle down and the intelligence to realise a good period with us will lead to a bigger payday when he does transfer.
Iโm an Argyle fan and am a massive fan of Morgan Whittaker.we were very grateful to have had Morgan for the first half of the season.I have to say that I think it was very unprofessional of the decision makers at Swansea to treat an excellent young player in such a shoddy manner. Having said that,I wish him all the best in the future with Swansea !!
Possibly a useful addition to swansea, so it’s up to morgan to show what he can do at a higher level than Plymouth, and who knows where that’ll take him .
