The compensation clause holding up Martin’s Southampton appointment

It has been a strange two weeks at Swansea City with press reports and speculation over an imminent appointment of Russell Martin and his team wide of the mark as the compensation issue drags on.

After a period where it seemed that the compensation was anywhere between ยฃ500k and ยฃ800k, a BBC report yesterday revealed that the difference between the Championship compensation and the Premier League compensation is almost ยฃ800k alone – the report stating it’s the difference between ยฃ1.25m and ‘almost’ ยฃ2m.

Whichever side of the fence you sit on this one you can see the argument on the other side.ย  By the time the approach was made Southampton were confirmed to be a Championship club even if they had not finished their Premier League campaign.ย  ย  However from the other side the point is they were a Premier League club even though they were destined for the Championship.

Logic (is there logic in football?) dictates that given they are now a Championship Club and Russell Martin is – at this moment – Swansea City manager therefore the clause surely is one that dictates he is joining a Championship club.ย  But, as referenced earlier, I can see and understand the opposite argument.

These figures also highlight the point that was made yesterday that the lack of communication leads to misinformation and speculation something that we know for certain Andy Coleman and Paul Watson are keen to stamp out during their time in the club.

Conspiracy Theorists at the moment will tell you that maybe the club are actually doing their work to stop the leaks at the moment.ย  ย It wouldn’t be the first time that information was officially leaked from the club to actually test where the leaks are.ย  ย I admit it could give some level of credence to why there is so much differing information out there but I’m not sure I subscribe completely to this theory although, again, I do see why it is being suggested.

Back to Martin though, we know he was in Swansea yesterday taking some time during half term to play FootGolf with his family.ย  ย Of course the reports have been that personal terms have been agreed with Southampton so the compensation hold up is consistent in at least that side of the story if nothing else.

The two clubs though do both need to get to an agreement over the compensation as the standoff between the two is not doing either club any real benefit.ย  ย Both will want to move on with their summer plans and that is something much easier to do when you have the man at the helm who will pick the team for the coming season.

And then finally we can put the matter to bed and move on – that’s what we all want?

  1. Well Well, it just apitamises the money driven, pathetic Yank losers we have in our club. Rather than get the RM deal over the line, they now stall, and by doing so put further pressure on the up coming season. There is no dignity in what is, a purely money driven project. We may be relegated this season, and it would be a dig to the heart to play Wrexham, who have owners that actually share the dream, and enjoy the excitement of touching success with the fans. Let’s march from the Vetch to the .Com, and let these leaches know they are not wanted in this city.

  2. It’s always been about money.Dont invest.sell the best,no money for getting us back to the premiership.A measly ยฃ10 million pounds investment.what hope does the next manager have.bob hope.

  3. Do we have to accept these pathetic losers taking our club into oblivion. Nothing but a bunch of leaches. No we don’t have to accept this mismanagement. We can give the message that they are unwelcome in our club. No season ticket for me, and no goodies from the club shop. Let’s march to the .com.

  4. We are heading back to the Penney day’s where money was taken out and nothing invested so something has to be done before it’s too late.

  5. Why oh why are we yet again going for a manager who hasn’t done anything haven’t we learnt anything from the Nathan Jones saga obviously not it doesn’t pay let’s go for a well known manager who is well established in the game
