Earlier this week the Swans were linked with a move for Everton striker Ellis Simms who spent some time on loan last season at Sunderland and, as the week went on, the links became louder and more frequent.
The links were interesting enough with reports that both Sunderland and Ipswich were interested in making a permanent move but an “unnamed” side was also said to be interesting.ย ย It could have been lazy journalism that linked Swansea but there is increasing speculation that the Swans are indeed that unnamed side and that we could be closing in on a deal for Simms.
There was certainly more than one rumour yesterday on Twitter that Simms was in Swansea and with Everton supposedly keen on Joel Piroe the speculation was gathering pace that the ยฃ3m+ rated striker could be used as part of a deal to take Piroe to Merseyside.
Even if that was to be the case then the Swans will not find it easy with Tony Mowbray keen to take Simms back to Sunderland, given the impact the 22 year-old made last time around in the Northeast, bagging seven goals in just 17 second-tier appearances.
That goalscoring prowess is no fluke either, as the Everton youngster previously struck ten in 24 during a spell at Blackpool and seven in 21 for Hearts, even bagging against Chelsea in the Premier League this season, leading Sky Sports pundit Karen Carney to call his finishing ability “unbelievable”
It seems almost certain that Piroe will leave the Swans at some stage this summer which leaves a big hole in the side for someone to fit and a player with the record of Simms would be a natural replacement if we could pull off this kind of deal.
The Swans already seem to have secured their first signing of the summer with the news that Josh Ginnelly seems set to sign and it would be a superb addition should Simms become the next signing.
Earlier in the week it was reported that Ipswich had a ยฃ4m bid turned down for the player that leaves us to assume that any interest from the Swans could only be as part of some level of exchange deal for Piroe or at least dependent on Piroe leaving which does not seem imminent based on information available at the moment.ย ย The other option of course is a loan away from Everton but it has been suggested on more than one occasion that any move away from Goodison this summer will be a permanent one.ย ย But thats rumour and hersay.
This could definitely be an interesting one to follow.
Sounds like an ideal replacement for PIROE if and when he leaves !
Yes, if he comes!
Ellis Simms would be a good replacement for Piroe and a proven striker at this level. Josh Ginnelly isnโt a striker and even worse heโs not up to championship level in other words his only asset is heโs a so-called freebie
