Swans miss out on two transfer targets – Williams still hopeful for more

Luke Williams spent most of his press conference yesterday afternoon not talking about the visit to Leicester City tonight but answering questions on the newest addition to his squad – Ronald – and the activity that will take place (or not as the case may be) in the next 48 hours or so.

The Swans boss though did reveal that the club have narrowly missed out on two unnamed transfer targets and felt that he could easily have been sat answering the questions on the back of a triple signing for the club.

Williams also outlined three key characteristics that he and the club are looking for in their transfer dealings – the attributes of pace, power and aggression are clearly very high in scouting and the data model.

The Swans boss was also keen to talk up the work and effort going into the window when he said “I cannot fault the level of work that has gone into trying to get the right players.ย ย  And the level of work that has gone into persuading players that this is where they want to be.ย ย  We have narrowly missed out on two players and we could easily have been sat here with three players.”

With just over two days left in the window, the boss is expecting a flurry of activity still at the end of the window and whilst players in are clearly on the agenda he was also keen to stress that some players could leave if that was right for both player and club – our club!

“There is a chance that players will go to play football elsewhere but we are focusing on trying to strengthen the squad.ย  We want pace, power and aggression so players coming in will be of that ilk and we will do everything that we can to get the right player in.”

The signing of Ronald was very much a left field signing and Williams was asked if that was a sign of things to come to which he said all options were being considered “There is always room to bring in a player that everybody knows but maybe as well there is one that just fits us perfectly and we can get more accurate with the recruitment.ย  We are going to try and unearth players wherever we can.

“It could be pretty hectic so expect anything!”

'Didn't want to come' = 'nothing here that I want to be part of'?????

Especially with sought after talent.

Sadly, it will always be difficult to convince young talented players to join Swansea on relatively low wages, and to move to an area without as much infrastructure and far away from cities such as London, Birmingham, Manchester etc.

Whilst the opportunity to play regular first team football and have good facilities behind you is exciting, these players are humans too, and go out boozing and shopping. Swansea is hardly a metropolitan utopia to facilitate the life of a footballer.

I'm certainly not talking down the area or bashing it, but we have to acknowledge that this is a problem for the Club and it is facing an uphill battle convincing players to come here instead of Watford, QPR, Bristol etc.

I so hope Ronald will be a great signing. I really do. However, I can't see it. I also don't want to hear about people we tried to sign and didn't. We've had those platitudes for many a year. I truly despise these Head of Recruitment roles. I just don't get why the manager doesn't pick who he wants to sign. (It's understandable in recruiting youth players). Don't try telling me Williams was after Ronald !!!!
I shall watch Sky Sports tomorrow in hope rather than anticipation. I expect it to be much like the final day of the window in 11 (?) when my hope was extinguished by the return of Fede Bessone and the remarkable signing of Darnel Situ (!!!!!).
I hope to proved wrong.

Ronald showed glimpses of what heโ€™s about last night at Leicester.Fast, direct and plays on the front foot. Once he gets upto speed, Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll become a crowd favourite.

Isn't the final day Thursday this year? I'd guess Williams is on the same head coach contract as Duff, who stated publicly that he had no input into player recruitment. He said something like, I coach what I'm given.

Been watching the Swans since the very late 1970s and running the Planet Swans website (in all its current and previous guises since the summer of 2001 As it stood JackArmy.net was right at the forefront of some of the activity against Tony Petty back in 2001, breaking many of the stories of the day as fans stood against the actions where the local media failed. Was involved with the Swans Supporters Trust from 2005, for the large part as Chairman before standing down in the summer of 2020.
