Are the Swans going to make move for free agents?

The transfer window closed just over a fortnight ago with the Swans dealings said to have come up short in a few departments after a busy summer with player movement both ways being relatively frequent.

Of course the closure of any transfer window is not necessarily the end of transfer dealings until January.  We saw that ourselves last season when we signed Yannick Bolasie on a short term deal and Luke Williams was certainly not ruling out the chance of the Swans doing something similar in the coming weeks.

A quick glance around the free agent market show plenty of options available but there is a definite need for any move to be one that benefits the club and not any level of panic signature just to add a much needed number to the squad.  Any signing must be able to add value to the first team over the short term nature of the deal and not just draw a wage whilst waiting around for what they hope to be a better offer in January.

“I think there’s more free agents than ever before,” Williams said when addressing a question on whether it was a possibility that the Swans may make a move back into the market.

“The Premier League is a global league. The Championship is becoming more and more of a global league. So there are a lot of British players that are being forced out of squads.

“Maybe because of some of the finances involved some of the players can afford to wait as well. When you take that into consideration as well. If we’d managed to have a really bad streak and we’re unfortunate with injuries and things like this, there are very good players that would be able to come in at very short notice, strengthen the squad and help us out in that way.

“We have that option as well, and it is something that’s been discussed.”

“We have spoken about a couple of players that have come up and at the moment we’re not 100 per cent sure if that’s the right player for us and whatever.  It’s good to know that player’s available potentially, but we didn’t act on it.

“We have to get the right player, and not be too panicked into getting the wrong player in.”

It is clear that Luke was replying with some level of caution but he followed that up with a pretty big hint that something could be in the offing when he added “With that said, I think when needs must, you probably throw more caution to the wind, potentially trying to bring a player in on a short-term contract.

“When I came here we had Yannick Bolasie, who was one of the most incredible players I’ve ever worked with. An incredible guy and what a footballer. He was on a short-term contract and those sorts of things are possible.

“There are players that will become available in that way and potentially available because we think they’re the perfect fit and potentially available because we feel like we’re in a place where we need to take a risk on a player.

“We’ll act accordingly.”
