The positive news of the departures of Messrs Levein and Kaplan seem a lifetime ago and the new owners have some major decisions to make on the future of Swansea City Football Club. Get them wrong and League One football is a serious possibility.
Somehow when all things seemed reasonably rosy in the gardens of SA1 back Christmas time and the play-offs coming into view the mood couldn’t be more different just a month later with the Swans diving more than Harry Darling in a Derby game.
And whilst it is fairly clear that there are many things wrong behind the scenes, it appears that they aren’t being helped – or arguably are caused – by chairman Andy Coleman.
It seemed common knowledge that the prospective West Brom move for Luke Williams was not as innocent as the (at the moment) Swans boss would like fans to believe and Coleman is sure to have been less than pleased with what went on.
But regardless of what happened, he was allowed to continue in his role which can now be seen to be a huge error of judgement by those in power as the Swans’ form has fallen off a very large cliff.
Talking about a job in the manner he did was one thing – a job at a team just a few places above us at the time no less – but to then suggest his agent was unwell when even the BBC reported that it was indeed agent led suggests that he thinks we’re all fools. We most certainly are not, Luke.
And now, on the back of yet another damaging and embarrassing defeat in what has to be the worst week of Williams’ managerial career it is more than clear that his time is up in South Wales and the plaster, so to speak, needs to be ripped off.
But will Coleman act? This is the problem we face ourselves with. I was in attendance for the Nathaniel MG opening ceremony in Llansamlet back in September and Coleman was clear: “Luke doesn’t even know how good he is and how much he has taught me.” Surely recent times have shown him this is not the man to have faith in?
This is a chairman relying on a manager who previously has only managed in the non and lower leagues to advise him and sometimes direct him; made all the worse by the absence of a Sporting Director or anyone of any note who has knowledge of British football in the upper echelons of the club.
And today, we hear that Coleman has abandoned his discussions with a potential candidate for the role of Sporting Director and will therefore continue to make the decisions regarding recruitment at our club.
Goodness me, this is Championship football! We have an individual – for all his effort and good will – who has zero experience of British football making key decisions for our future when we sit at a major crossroads.
Dwindling crowds, (surely not even 10k actual attendees vs Sheffield United in midweek) a squad lacking in quality and leadership, a manager failing to deliver and clearly wanting away and a club meandering towards the relegation zone.
It has to change now or else League One football may well be on the horizon for the first time since 2008. Change must start, today.
Get Luke out and hire a proper football operator Andy, or your investment along with those shares purchased by the new majority owners will be dropping fast. Much like our league position.
And forget the Swansea way, this is not it. Russell Martin’s football was not it either. It can’t exist in the way it was so perhaps we should focus on a new identity. One that doesn’t involve our captain hiding behind our defence?
