The Swans have every right to be grateful today after Leeds United promotion back to the Premier League was confirmed yesterday evening when Sheffield United lost at Burnley.
The defeat for the Blades also saw Burnley return to the top flight at the first time of asking leaving just them and Leeds now to fight out for which side goes up as the Champions this season.
The news though that was confirmed from the Swans perspective was a windfall of £2m from the deal that saw Joel Piroe move to Leeds two summers ago after two seasons here in SA1. The striker made the move in a deal said to be worth £10m at the time but with a clause that a further £2m was payable should Leeds win promotion at any stage during the first four years of his contract at Elland Road.
Maybe it was with a degree of satisfaction that it was Piroe who scored four of the six goals that saw Leeds pick up a comprehensive win over Stoke yesterday that was determined to be the result that took them to the 94 point barrier that has proven to be enough to secure their promotion.
Those four goals also sees Piroe take over at the top of the Championship goalscoring charts this season after a nine match drought without a goal prior to yesterday’s goalscoring exploits.
The purchase and subsequent sale of Piroe has proven to be one of Swansea’s better pieces of transfer business in recent years and with a £2m windfall coming into the club to enhance the quality of that deal we can only hope that we can use the money to drive a similarly good piece of business.
