A Hartlepool United spokesman said “Michael Maidens was tragically killed in a road traffic accident last night.” “It has been mutually decided that our game with Swansea be postponed and that has the full backing of the Football League.” “Our thoughts and best wishes are with Michael’s family at this very sad time.” Police have reported that Maidens was a passenger in a car which lost control and collided with a metal post on the A174 at 8.25pm on Friday night.
The game was called off just before lunchtime today with fans already circulating around the Liberty Stadium when the news filtered through. The club have confirmed that all tickets sold for the game will be valid for the rearranged date whilst refunds will be available to anyone who cannot make that date.
I am sure Swansea fans everywhere will join in passing on thoughts and prayers to the families of those involved and everyone involved with Hartlepool United. On days like this, football really doesn’t matter.
RIP Michael.
