Martinez Turns His Attentions Elsewhere

The Swansea City manager believed that he had got McGinn until the Irishman opted instead to join Celtic earlier in the week.

But instead of sitting back diappointed at missing out on a target, Roberto was in typical bullish mood as he turned his attentions elsewhere and believes Mcginn has made the move for money rather than football reasons.

“Niall is one of the players we followed and we made it clear he was a player that would fit into the way we play and our future,” said Martinez in today’s Evening Post.

“As I have always said, the players who come in need to be desperate to play for Swansea City.

“If that is not the case, if people prefer to make a financial situation or go into a different kind of chapter in their careers then that is fine for us.

“The last thing we want is to bring players here that aren’t fully committed and their heart and soul are not at Swansea City.

“Niall was one of the many players we have followed throughout the season and to bring them in must be better than what we have got.

“We carry on in that line – it is no disappointment at all.

“When you sign a young player the first thing is to fulfil your potential.

“With the way we play and what we can offer is for them to reach their potential and that is to play in the Premier League.

“When you are a young player and you decide to go to the next club for the wrong reasons, it is only the player that is going to be affected.

“If you are 32 or 33, making a move for financial reasons would probably make sense, but when you are young there are other priorities.

“We never made it clear that we needed Niall McGinn at any costs.”
