Another injury set back means that Butler will not be fit until February by which chance he knows that time is limited for him to impress Rodgers although he has not given up hope of a new contract in the summer.
Butler has not had a chance to impress Rodgers since he arrived in the summer but he is ready to prove himself when his fitness returns.
“It’s the last year of my contract and that is something which would spur a lot of people on.” he told the Evening Post
“But it’s out of my hands in a way. I’ve been out of the team for quite a while and the clock is running down, but my main goal is getting fit and making myself available.
“We haven’t talked about a contract because I’ve been injured and I imagine the gaffer wants to see me play first.
“I just want to get back and be available for the gaffer because I really want to show him what I’m about.
“I’ve missed out while the other lads have been given opportunities, so I want to make a big impression on him when I finally return.
“Watching the lads play has been great viewing and I think I can offer a lot in the system we play under Brendan,” said Butler.
“He has given the whole squad a lot of confidence in what we are doing.
“Last year we were very defensive, but the attackers will tell you that sometimes in games you have to help out.
“However, it has been pretty frustrating for me because I haven’t had any part to play in the season so far.
“The boys have done very well and are playing some great football, but the injury has denied me the chance to be involved.
“Hopefully that will change pretty soon.
“I’m in the gym working hard with the aim of returning as soon as I can,” he added. “That’s what I’m concentrating on at the moment.
“I see the boys every day in training and it’s hard at times because I’m on my own doing rehab, but I have to get through it and the hardest bit is over now.
“Kate, the physio, has had to hold me back at times because I’m so keen to get back.
“But I have to stick to the plan and after six weeks of rehab I will be back in the frame for selection.”
