Caulker Learning From Arrest Experience

Steven Caulker returned to the Swans side last weekend against Fulham ending a poor time for him professionally and personally

After a promising start to his Swans loan spell, an injury put him on the sidelines for a while and then he was arrested in Swansea last month after an incident in the street.

But he is looking to put both those things behind him and continue on the road to help the Swans secure at least one more season in the top flight although he may not be around to experience that if it happens.

Caulker told the Western Mailย โ€œIt was a tough time for me to deal with.

โ€œI was arrested for swearing in the street; it was something I shouldnโ€™t have done and Iโ€™ve apologised for it to the club and it wonโ€™t happen again.

โ€œThe manager had words with me and said Iโ€™ve got to walk away from situations like that. Iโ€™m still only 19 so I am still learning from these things but if I find myself in a similar situation next time Iโ€™ll be wiser for it and not let myself get involved.

โ€œIโ€™ve learned how things can turn against you very quickly if youโ€™re not careful.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t worried it would affect my future here because I had the full support from the gaffer when I explained the situation to him and made my apology.

โ€œHe had words but he was very understanding so it was great to hear that. And it made me realise even more this is a brilliant club to be part of. I want to show that on the pitch.

โ€œI was always coming back here after the injury,โ€ he said, having initially returned to White Hart Lane for an operation and the early stages of the rehabilitation from surgery.

โ€œThe injury was a frustrating time for me but the boys have been brilliant throughout and Iโ€™ve had a lot of support from the family and friends which was great because it can be hard for you.

โ€œBut Iโ€™ve dealt with it and feel like Iโ€™ve come back stronger.

โ€œI just hope to stay fit and the main thing is to get games under my belt now and for Swansea to stay up this season โ€“ that would be a fantastic achievement.

โ€œI know my loan is up for review in January but I think Iโ€™m going to be here for the season now. Certainly as far as Iโ€™m concerned thatโ€™s the case and Iโ€™m happy with it. Iโ€™ve enjoyed it here so far and Iโ€™ve got my sights set on a long-season ahead.

โ€œFulham was the first game I was available so I was delighted to start,โ€ said the highly-rated youngster, whose injury was caused when he became caught in the net at Arsenal having made a goal-line clearance.

โ€œIt was my first win as a Swansea player and a first goal to celebrate in Swansea colours so I was delighted.

โ€œTo get a clean sheet is a big plus and I am very grateful for the opportunity to start.

โ€œBut thereโ€™s competition for places all over the squad so you can never relax, you always have to look over your shoulder.

โ€œI know I canโ€™t rest on my laurels at any point. Iโ€™m fully aware that, for instance, on Saturday, I kept the captain out of the team.

โ€œYou have to stay on your toes every day of the week, but that brings the best out of everyone.โ€
