Downes set for West Ham for £12m including add-ons

Swans midfielder Flynn Downes is due to complete a medical at West Ham in the next 24 hours according to Sky Sports after the two clubs agreed a fee rising to £12m.

It is understood that the payment will be structured with an initial £9m up front for the former Ipswich Town man with a further £3m in add ons and performance bonuses.

There will be a percentage of the fee going to his former club but there will still be enough to represent a substantial profit on the £1m that the Swans shelled out on the midfielder a year ago.

Downes had a superb first season in the Championship as Swansea finished in mid table and it looked as if it would be Crystal Palace who would secure his signature after a bid was submitted on the weekend.

But David Moyes’ side have now seemingly come in with a strong bid for the player who is a boyhood West Ham fan which will undoubtedly make the process much simpler.

Ironically the move would be to replace another Hammers fan in Mark Noble who retired this summer and Downes will surely not disappoint, one would bet that he will take the move up to the Premier League in his stride especially alongside the likes of Declan Rice.

Should the move go through as expected it should mean that the pressure is ever so slightly off in terms of selling any other prized assets going forwards.
