Another former Swan on the move – this time to Ipswich Town ahead of Leeds United interest

There was genuine hope when Ali Al-Hamadi was at Swansea that we had another star for the future but he is now back in the Championship having been snapped up by promotion chasing Ipswich Town after some superb performances for AFC Wimbledon.

Twenty-six goals in twenty-nine games tells you all that you need to know but it is also enough for Ipswich to make a move for the player who was also attracting interest from Leeds United.

It was back in March 2021 that we asked the question on these pages if we had another one for the future but just a few months later the player was on the move to pastures new.

Al-Hamadi left the Swans in the summer on 2021, a move that he described himself as a gamble after he was offered a new contract to stayย “I left Swansea when I had a contract offer there and it would have been really easy to stay comfortable in that amazing environment with great facilities,” he told the Athletic.

โ€œBut I chose to gamble. There are ups and downs with that, trying lots of different clubs and getting rejected, I went on loan spells, like to Bromley in the National League, and now Iโ€™m at Wimbledon and loving it. Playing every week is what every player wants. As a player, when you feel loved and appreciated, thatโ€™s when you play your best football.”

Just a few weeks ago he told Sky Sports of his ambitions to reach the Premier League “For me, the sky is the limit,” he said. “I want to play in the Premier League; I want to play as high as I possibly can. These are the things I visualise and what keep me going every day when I’m working hard.”

Given Ipswich’s league position that could come around quicker than maybe even he expected.

The fee is believed to be ยฃ1.75 million – an AFC Wimbledon record with a sizeable amount reported as going to Wycombe as part of a sell-on clause.

On paper it looks it, his time at the club though he had the likes of Ayew, Bony, Baston, OMB, Brewster in front of him and he wanted to leave to at the time for 1st team football.

We couldn't offer that to him at the time given the players in front of him at that stage in his career.

Surely a couple of loans away might have been a good shout?

Admittedly may just have started to shine but in light of Whittaker, Gyokeres etc I'm doubtful

See how he gets on before bemoaning our fortunes. He really only had a short few months playing u21s football with us due to injury, and despite his massive size advantage never impressed at u18s level the same way strikers like Cullen, Iwan Morgan, josh Thomas did. Was offered a contract to stay on but he wanted to pursue first team football instead (as he put it) and was nowhere near ready to do that with us at the time.

We won't be due anything (beyond a fraction of a training fee maybe, was only with us 3 years) as he was unemployed for a while before joining Wycombe and then dropped down again to Wimbledon. Fair play to him if he's managed to get himself up to this level, I honestly didn't see it in him even when he had that short purple patch in the u21s.

I forgot he went there via Wycombe, and also wrongly assumed that he went straight from us to Adams Park.

Good luck to the young man, I wish him all the best (apart from whenever he faces us).

Didn't do much whilst at Wycombe - no return in 9 games and I think Derby didn't fancy him either.

L2 to this level is a jump - possibly thinking he may get a bump in wages if they go up to. Good move for him but timing just didn't work out for him whilst here.

Been watching the Swans since the very late 1970s and running the Planet Swans website (in all its current and previous guises since the summer of 2001 As it stood JackArmy.net was right at the forefront of some of the activity against Tony Petty back in 2001, breaking many of the stories of the day as fans stood against the actions where the local media failed. Was involved with the Swans Supporters Trust from 2005, for the large part as Chairman before standing down in the summer of 2020.
