Hail The Wales on Sunday?

Now I don’t buy the Wales on Sunday very often but today I thought why not as the man shouted in the street “Wales on Sunday only 30p” so I parted with my money and bought the issue. And as usual I turned straight to the sport section and realised just what I have missed out on in the past 11 months.

Of course, all Swansea fans should remember that our club is still here today thanks to the journalistic genius of Paul Abbandonato (Wales No 1 Soccer Writer – is that self proclaimed?) and the way they led from the front when Tony Petty was here. We forget that the protests, marches and endless meetings that the consortium had to oust Petty were purely a smokescreen for the petition that the Wales on Sunday wrote. I even remember back in the time picking up and reading “Exclusives” that had been on the internet sites for several days beforehand.

But that’s in the past. Now we can sit back safely in the knowledge that the Supporter’s Trust have ‘turned to the Wales On Sunday’ after acknowledging the wonderful campaign that they led. So what do the trust want this time? Well, surprisingly it’s their cash for loan players scheme. You know the one, the one that has been in the EP every night since Wednesday, on the official site, all the unofficial sites and for those of you at the match yesterday – the same one that you were given a form about when you entered the ground. Pure co-incidence all that as the trust have turned specifically to the Wales on Sunday. Ha!

And the trust spokesperson has apparantely said “And it is to WoS that the trust turns to in their hour of need – as they did not so many months ago when we needed assistance to rid the club of Tony Petty. WoS was instrumental in highlighting the plight of the club and it’s supporters during that dark period. Once again, we need WoS to be at the forefront in helping to maintain League status in Swansea”

So there you have it, a campaign that no doubt those at the WoS believe was doomed to failure is now up and running with a real vengeance because we have the Cardiff journalists on board. The same ones that we paid homage too for saving us last time around and yet again they are blowing their own trumpet. Sadly, in blowing it, it makes Swans fans realise that the trumpet in question needs some serious tuning.

Fair play to the Wales on Sunday for carrying the trust story but to make themselves out to be the club’s saviour is pathetic and uncalled for. Sad, the levels that some newspapers have to stoop to at times. Personally, I would have thought that anyone who is “Wales No1 Soccer Writer” would rise above it and be ashamed but clearly it is just a tabloid Sunday newspaper and they should remember the old saying of tomorrow’s fish and chip wrapping.

Well done for printing the details but another big black mark for believing that we couldn’t do it without them. And for me, I wish I’d saved that 30p after all
