The rumour mill is in full swing regarding a potential return to Blackpool for (to them) much-loved striker Jerry Yates. After a season on loan with Derby County where he netted 10 goals, and having seemingly fallen out of favour here at Swansea City, a move back to Bloomfield Road is certainly gaining traction among the Seasiders’ faithful.
Yates, 28, enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Blackpool between 2020 and 2023, becoming a genuine cult hero by scoring 46 goals in 139 appearances. His prolificacy was instrumental in their promotion from League One in 2021, and his continued efforts in the Championship cemented his place in the hearts of the fans. It’s no surprise, then, that many supporters are eager to see him in a tangerine shirt once more.
Blackpool boss Steve Bruce has not shied away from addressing the speculation, providing a tantalising glimpse into the club’s thoughts on a potential reunion. Speaking recently, Bruce stated, “Everyone in the club likes Jerry Yates so I hear – he’s a bit of a cult hero. If he ever becomes available and he wants to drop down a division, then we would love to take him, but it might not be possible.”
This comment from Bruce is significant. It acknowledges Yates’s status at the club and clearly indicates a desire to bring him back, should the circumstances align. The “drop down a division” caveat is key, as Blackpool are currently in League One while of course we are in the Championship. Yates is currently contracted to Swansea City until June 30, 2026, which means any move would likely involve a transfer fee.
Given his contract situation, and the fact he spent last season out on loan, Swansea City may be open to a sale to avoid losing him for free next summer. However, the financial aspect of any deal will undoubtedly play a crucial role. While Blackpool are clearly working hard to strengthen their squad, as evidenced by recent signings, securing a player of Yates’s calibre would be a significant investment for a League One side.
The prospect of Jerry Yates returning to Blackpool is an exciting one for fans. His previous exploits at the club, combined with his proven goalscoring ability at a higher level, make him a hugely appealing target. Whether the stars align for this emotional reunion remains to be seen, but Steve Bruce’s comments confirm that the door is certainly not closed on a potential return for the beloved striker.
