Happy St.David's Day!

There's lots of hype about the Welsh being passionate people who are proud of their country but, in reality, our national Saint's Day is a relativly damp squib compared to our Celtic cousins in Ireland and Scotland.

There's lots done in schools but not much elsewhere.

Memories of going to school with the remnants of a trimmed-down leek pinned to my chest. Preferred wearing a leek as it was more fun than wearing a daffodil. Smelt nice, too.

Have vivid memories of deciding to eat my leek during the St David's Day assembly when in Gwyrosydd primary school back in the day, then my mother having to be called to come and get me after throwing up over everyone in sight 🤢

Ha ha, been there and done that. Foot long leek, spent all morning nibbling it, spent most of the afternoon on the bog. I can hear my mothers words right now.

All I could taste for days was leek! Strange how I remember that but can't remember what I had for dinner yesterday 🤔 😅

Used to be a half day off school as well. I can remember walking down the hill behind the top shops coming out of Clase school to go back home and spend the afternoon playing in the street. On to Cresswell Road, past the Co op on Solva Road and up to the Carno Place homestead. In my head at least it was always a beautiful, sunny early spring day like today’s and that early finish from school always seemed really special.

Not in my school, we must have been hard done by.

Always had half day for Saint David’s day throughout my school life. I left school to go to university in 1974.
