Is This a New Jay Fulton? Or Does He Need To Go?

It's not a new Jay Fulton. It's the same one we've always had. The capable Championship midfielder somehow entirely blamed for whatever happened when he was paired with Grimes.

By no means a great player, but certainly not a bad one, despite what the people who don't like to think too much may say.

Grimes stops being captain, team improves. Strange. I'd always held the position that Grimes is not captain material.
But what do I know?
Grimes goes, team go forwards and are more potent with less possession
Grimes goes. Coventry go backwards and sideways
Grimes goes. Jay Fulton looks a lot better.

Really wondering what Grimes had on previous managers and the club
Even though according to some of our fonts of wisdom, we'd be screwed without Grimes and should have binned Jay

I have bashed Fulton more than most on here the past couple of months but he was excellent against Leeds.

That however does not mean that he hasn't had a tendency to just disappear positionally whenever he took to the pitch this season. The fact that he has had multiple games as a midfielder where he has had the least touches of the ball in a team that was focused around a possession and passing based play style is a damning enough statistic by itself.

If we see more of the Fulton that we saw on Saturday then great, but it does not excuse the Fulton we had seen the rest of 2024/25 so far.

He's never even been looked at by Scotland despite spending most of his career with us in the Prem or the Championship.
Solid enough to fill a squad, but we need to be looking at better quality this summer.

One decent performance doesn't make up for years of mediocrity.
He's not been brilliant as a defensive midfielder, he's not a creative midfield player, and he's certainly not a box to box midfielder that gets you goals. So what exactly is he? He's a waste of a contract in my opinion and should have been moved on years ago, except that nobody wanted him. Flynn Downes was here 1 season and went for a great sum of money. That tells you everything you need to know about Fulton.

Waste of a wage and registration slot in the squad.

Full-Tonne? I'd miss him. Stockholm syndrome.

He's been decent, mediocre, okay and awful with us.

Trouble is unlike other clubs we don't trust our youngsters or give them a run of games. So players like Fulton become untouchable.

If we can win our next 2 I would be tempted to start looking at some of the U23's

As would I, but from Sheehan's perspective, if he thinks he's in with a chance of the permanent appointment he's not going to experiment.

I'd just happily settle for winning the next two and chilling until the end of the season watching the clownshow up East unfold.

Oh hang on, he has one decent game and that erases all the poor performances he’s had??? righty oh.
