Are we doing OK or underachieving?

Another factor is that I believe we are the ONLY championship team who have failed to score from a set piece this season (barring Idah's penalty).
This can make a huge difference in games that are decided by fine margins. Not sure who is coaching this aspect these days - but we need a rethink!

I’m sure Margetson is in charge of set pieces.

To be fair on set pieces, we seem to have been trying various routines and some have been close to working, so they are obviously practicing them. I'd prefer that to just lumping every corner and wide free kick into the penalty area in the hope Burgess get his head on it.

When it comes to free kicks we can shoot from, I can't remember many opportunities this season? No idea who'd take them in any case. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but it feels like we haven't had anyone good at scoring direct from free kicks since Gylfi.

I've given up on the standard corner routines tbh. The best bit is when the corner is actually given by the ref..a nano-second of excitement..then realism sets in, nope sod all is going to happen

One thing I'd put into the positive column is that we look a more competent, professional defensive unit these days, although the bar was super low there...

It wasn't that long ago that we were comedically, self-destructively bad at times. We look solid overall and that gives you a base to build on. How far back do we have to go to find the last manager that gave a sh*t about being tight defensively? Not lip service, but actually clearly working at it. I think it does come at the cost of attacking play, but at least it's something to build on and tweak, even if it's not perfect.

Completley disagree if anything I'm surprised at just how poor we are defensively under Sheehan especially considering that he focuses on that side of the game more.

If it wasnt for vigs pulling out a worldie save or 2 ever game and a few last ditch block/tackles from cabango then we could have quite easilly conceded another 7/8. We concede goals out of nothing teams dont have to work hard to score.

We dont score more then 1 goal a game, we concede very easilly, we don’t win home games and we dont score set pieces. We play like we're a serious relegation contender under Sheehan and then stats/ eye test back that up.

The defence isn’t as strong as the goals against column suggests. We were lucky not to concede more against Leicester and it should have been 3 or 4 against Southampton. Vigs is saving us a lot. Our goals against number could easily be around 19 to 20 and then it doesn’t look so good.

People can disregard stats all they like but teams with our defensive numbers don’t sustain that level.

Yep very much reminds me of that crazy defensive run we had with Luke at the start of last season. Its going to collapse at one point and we can't really complain because all of the stats and performances have indicted exactly that.

Think we walk away from every game this season and say to ourselves 'wow we were lucky not to concede more then we did today' if I'm being brutally honest. That is not the sign of a good defensive structure. Just because we don't concede goals from passing out from the back doesn't mean we look anymore solid then before.

Afternoon Jack . Out of interest, do you have any stats as to how many saves Vigs has made so far this season compared to other championship keepers? This may give another view point as to how well we actually are defensively
