Flew into Stockholm earlier having regrettably missed the match and the passport entry queues at Arlanda Airport were very lengthy. Took 90 minutes to process a plane of 120 passengers, with 4 booths open.

Load of bollocks from the EU. If you are going to illegally enter it is highly unlikely you will do so on a BA flight from Heathrow to Arlanda where the security at the British end is equally tight.

Ironically, there were two Eurocrats on the flight who were fast tracked through passport control so they didn't have to endure their ridiculous rules.

It was the UK Tory government under Cameron who lobbied the EU to bring the system in. The UK Tory government agreed to it and it was announced by the European Commission in April 2016. In June 2016 the UK Tory government held a reference to leave the EU. UK Tory government took the UK out with a hard Brexit deal leaving the EU and the two institutions the UK was in the Customs Union and Single Market. Therefore giving the UK Third country status. Third countries can only spend 90 out 180 days in Schengen and the new system checks the going in and leaving and is not just about illegal immigration. Blame the Tories not the EU.

I haven't really been following this, but we are travelling to Italy in late July and then France in late October. Are we likely to be adversely affected at the airports or anything we should do in advance of travelling?

If I understand it correctly (which is far from guaranteed), if you're on the system, ie your prints & facial scan, you should get through relatively quickly which is what I did at Faro on Wednesday because my prints & scan were done in December. The big delays are probably due to lots of people having to have their prints & scan done for the first time. So, you may have delays when entering Italy in July but if you get your biometrics done then, you should have no trouble getting into France in October. Everywhere is supposed to be operational on 10th April so unless where you are entering Italy has fucked up, the rules are that you have to have your biometrics done then and there. All I can add is "Good luck"
