I went through Malaga about 6 months ago. To access the non Schengen area I had to go through Border control which was after the main security area and duty free/restaurant area.
There were around 12 positions for passport inspection, but less than half were open and there was a a queue. We got there early, we queued for around 15 minutes but the queue increased quite quickly. There were people on flights to Turkey and other non EU destinations in a flap as they’d left it late to get through border control and their gate closure times were fast approaching.

There’s a small choice of restaurants, cafes etc in the gates after border control, I’d aim to get the formalities sorted soon after arriving at the airport because it didn’t seem like the Border control staff were going to break sweat or be bothered if people missed their flights.

Anyone departed back to the UK through Málaga recently? Is it chaos? Heading home from Nerja via AGP on Thursday
Seville was ok on Friday night. All passport machines were operational and despite there being two UK flights leaving very close to each other, there was no queuing involved. Automated machine passport scan, no biometrics involved, passport stamped.

Will be in Bologna again on Tuesday night, for the third time this year. Let’s see if this means I bypass any of the potential steps.

Took the family to Nerja for a week in 2004. Nice calm place but I wasn't keen on the gritty sand. Did you check out the caves?

Do Malaga still have just one check in desk for cases for all Ryan Air flights?.. spent many times queuing .

We've been coming here with and without the kids for years, I'd say 20+. We really like the place and it does feel like home. We want to do a 4 week stint here one year. We've only ever been Feb/March/April or late October so it's never been a beach destination for us.

We've visited the caves several times - always a good option if it rains. We usually walk to and from Maro and always have our Frigiliana fixes - actually waiting for the bus there now as I type this. Walked back from Torrox this trip too.

We will certainly be back, but wondering how the airport will be!

I'm definitely preaching to the converted here then! Yeah, we visited Frigiliana too, nice place. Fair play, Torrox is a fair walk! We liked Nerja because it wasn't too touristy back in 2004, what's it like now?

It's still quite bustling although we've been here over Easter of course when there's lots of parades and church services going on. We don't feel it's any more touristy than when we first came, there continues to be an absence of high rise hotels, restaurants are plentiful and reasonable prices. Menus tend to be samey but what do you expect really. We wouldn't come in the height of summer as I said before, but we will be back!

My brother went back from malaga couple of weeks ago, no problem no massive queues. Glad you are enjoying nerj, haven't been there for yonks even though it's not that far

My report on leaving Málaga. Just sat down with a coffee at the departure gate.

Taxi dropped us off and the vehicle queues were quite long. Entered the terminal and it was very busy with people. Our check in with Jet2 was quick and then went straight to security, bit of a queue there but not too bad. We followed our own advice and headed straight to passport control. Now here's the thing I wonder whether UK travellers fully understand. If you have already registered on entry (i.e done your biometrics) and you are over 16, you can go through the e-gates which were pretty much unused and once done, get your passport stamped and that's it, simples! However if you don't go to the e-gates you are in a substantial queue. I had a polite disagreement with an official on the way in last week and said that I thought the signage wasn't clear enough because the e-gates on the way in were empty too.

Our flight is 30 minutes delayed and I'm yet to discover whether my car battery is flat after my alarm issue, but fingers crossed it will be fine!

Heading to Swansea this weekend to meet up with son, daughter in law and granddaughter who's having her first visit to Swansea and meeting her great grandparents for the first time!

I think your experiences with the egates mirror mine in Faro a couple of weeks ago. This comment rang a bell "I wonder whether UK travellers fully understand. If you have already registered on entry (i.e done your biometrics) and you are over 16, you can go through the e-gates which were pretty much unused." Both in and out, almost nobody seemed to be using the egates and I wizzed through while others were happy joining queues. I can't believe that only me and a middle-aged couple were the only ones on two whole flights who'd had their biometrics done in the previous 5 months. I also agree about insufficient signage but it's always going to take some countries longer than others to get all the details sorted out but having said that, all the egates were glowing green which was a big clue that they were active.

Have a nice weekend in Swansea.
