Ok, I’ll say it.

Oh right, so Newcastle with their budget can’t do it but if we sell Vip or Galbraith and bring in a very optimistic 20mill then we’ll be ok?
Right I get it now.
I'm sure that you're going to bang on about it until Matos eventually gets the sack. You'll be right then as everyone is eventually but Matos has his way of playing and even though you don't like it he won't change anytime soon.
Start a new thread about it after the QPR game. That'll make a change.

I think we’ll be able to tell which way we’re going style wise by what players come in this summer. Last summer we brought in Santos and Burgess which signals that the style we recruited for didn’t include a ball player at CB and Sheehan was seemingly happy with that. If we go and get a Harry Darling style defender then we know the focus will be more on building from the back.

I don’t think we can assume that just because Matos hasn’t got us playing out from the back that we don’t want to do it. With the pairing we have it wouldn’t be the best way to play anyway.

I’ve also heard people say that our midfield is just full of runners and lacks technical quality but the performances of Widell and Stamenic yesterday show that they are good footballers not just engines. Add Galbraith back in and I think our midfield is very decent.

Things will take time, I don’t like everything I see when I watch us but I’m also not going to assume that it will stay that way.

Very disappointed in the complete lack of evolution and progression since VM has taken over, the football under Sheehans care taker period was far superior to what we’ve seen under Matos.
I was listening to talk sport last week and they were discussing Newcastle’s disappointing season, somebody said words to the affect of…they play high energy football but fall away in the second half as no team can keep that up, I think that applies perfectly to us as well.

Apart from the Wednesday game we haven’t had a single performance where it hasn’t been edge of the seat stuff, and our inability to trouble the sides above us is a major concern.

I really feel sorry for Vip, watching him charge around yesterday chasing down lost causes must be exhausting, absolutely no service which makes you wonder how the hell he’s managed to get the goals he has.

There was an instance yesterday where three of our players tried to hunt down their right back only for him to slip the ball to a team mate taking three players out and allowing their player to gallop forward and launch another cross into our box…schoolboy tactics.

Really struggling to see what the plan is and how we move forward playing this way, if Newcastle with their quality can’t maintain that level for ninety minutes then whatever recruitments we make in the close season I’m not holding out much hope for us either.

I watched Newcastle a few times on TV last season .

Surprised the experts didn't memtion they sold probably the key man in last years team
Isaak ,
He was the focul point of the team as well as scoring goals he led the team ,
He held up play to bring in runners from midfield , he ran in behind ,
The wide men of Murphy , Gordan , Barnes were electric out wide .
They created so many chances for Isaak .
Injuries to key play Bruno plus their fullbacks have had an impact on the team .

I also think what we do at CB will show the intent/ruthlessness of the owners as well. Bringing in Burgess was, at the time, seen as a coup and not cheap (wages wise, at least). He's had some decent games, but he doesn't seem like a great fit for us. If we make a decent effort to replace after one season - not just bring in another body, but make an effort to get a new starting CB with a different playing style - it'll be interesting to see. A lot of teams would just decide to live with what they have (as we may do).

Maybe they hope Lissah will be that guy and they can rotate him in and out to test the waters early on next season. Cabango has some armour based on his role as captain, so I'm assuming Burgess would the the one to make way.

We'll certainly be bringing in at least one CB anyway, but whether they are intended to be day 1 starters or not will be interesting.

Theres obviously limitations with our play under Matos, but in fairness he doesn't have wingers and we are safe.

So he achieved his first objective (survival), but things have to improve again next season. Playing well against promotion contenders but getting little from the game is tiresome now.

I dont think its going to be easy to progress forward again though, the accounts dont make great reading and replacing weak links in central defence and out wide will not cheap.
Getting decent loan signings would help, Nunes and Benson have been abysmal signings .

Like a broken clock. Just ignore all the other posts where he’s had egg on his face for being proved wrong.

I feel like I’ve been saying this for years, but loan signings need to improve your first XI IMO.

Whether by design or poor recruitment we seem to have gone away from that over the last 4/5 seasons, and regularly brought in 3 or 4 loan players who end up being squad players, at best.

Those type of loans cost alot of money for a player you only have for a year. They are only worth it if you have a squad capable of challenging at the top and you can incur the high costs with no resale value.

People will then complain that they have left the squad thin when they dont sign these type of filler loans.

In hindsight, the best thing Cooper brought to this club was his history in the England youth set-up. It meant he knew the best players and was able to convince them and their clubs to let them come here as he knew all about them and probably guaranteed their parent clubs that they'd be regular starters.

Looking back, how spoilt were we to have Gibbs-White, Guehi, Brewster, Gallagher, Woodman all brought in over those two seasons. Not to mention the career Gyokeres has gone on to have. Can't imagine we'd replicate anything like that again, but just getting in one player of the average calibre there would be an improvement on recent seasons.

Well most of the ones we have had this season have been a complete waste of money. Don't tell me one of the up and coming youngsters could have been any worse than Nunes and Benson have been this season, or Santos for that matter.

They definitely cost more individually, but personally I’d rather have 1 of that type than 3 or 4 of the recent ones who’ve only really succeeded in blocking pathways for our own ‘youngsters’, many of whom are now 21/22 and we have no idea if they’re good enough to play in the Championship.

The decision makers have obviously thought otherwise, but based on the recent accounts and 5 seasons of finishing 10th or below it seems a waste of time and money to me.

It’s called an opinion and if I say it myself a generally balanced one( see my comments on yesterday’s game) why don’t you counter my posts with an alternative post or try addressing some of the issues I raise I might have a little more respect for you then.

You could start by telling me why we’ve been in almost every game against the top six but ultimately faded away to a draw or defeat, or maybe youcould tell me why we’re unable to control games against the teams around or below us.
Even the victories have been at the expense of most of my nails, I’m not an acolyte I tell it how i see it unlike some on here who can’t accept the ship is sinking until it’s sitting on the seabed.

Only my opinion, but we are a mid table Championship side, same as last year, the year before that, and probably next season too, if we end up a mid table side next season I'll be happy.
Remember Hull? We're you there that day?...
