Trying to work out the financial implications of this for Southampton.

40k Southampton fans for travel and accommodation even at a conservative £200 each = £8m
Rumoured class action law suit from squad at approximately £250k per player = £6m
Legal representation for both hearings must have been at least 500k

Generous estimates would say that spygate has cost them their reputation and potentially at least £15m

Some of their more saleable assets may even seek legal action to terminate their contracts and leave for free

In my experience for an appeal to be successful you generally have to provide fresh information to support your claim that the severity of the sanction was disproportionate to the offence, just arguing that the the sanction was too severe is rarely successful.

We played back to back home games against Boro and Saints(I think) in April. Boro looked very ordinary and we should’ve beaten them.
Saints had a bit more quality and we should’ve drawn with them.
From both games and even when we played both away, Saints for me were the better of the two, so I really can’t understand why the went on this spying mission.

We should have beaten them both.

If it wasn’t for some incredibly poor officiating where we should have had a penalty whilst 1-0 and Downes should have got sent off as well.

We were well on top for a good period of the game against them.

Southampton should have been reduced to 10 men when we were 1 - 0 up. Downes was retrospectively banned for 3 games for violent conduct. The incident happened quite near the touchline close to half way yet the referee, his assistant and the fourth official all failed to see it apparently.

On top of this nonsense about Southampton players looking into legal action against their own club, I saw a suggestion from the Hull owner that they'd sue the FA for the late change of opponents if they lose the Playoff final.

All this underlines what a nonsense sport football has become today if we're honest about it. No one in football thinks that it's a good thing that a team has been punished for breaking the rules, they immediately consider how they can benefit from the decision instead.

If this happened to our team, I would be well p***ed off missing out on play off final. I think the punishment does not fit the crime. Southampton could miss out on hundreds of millions, just because of a guy with binoculars. This day and age with all the data is out there.

Just because of a guy live streaming the training session to his coaching team in a club endorsed episode of espionage which they have also admitted to against other clubs.

It happened to also be the day they were practicing penalties (previously quoted by the Boro staff). If I cheat in a poker tournament to get through to the final and the final prize is worth millions then its not harsh if I am thrown out if I get caught.

It sucks for the fans yes, but if the club is cheating then the blame lies with the club not with the authorities who issued the only punishment suitable for the crime.

That's a nonsensical argument though isn't it? The EFL think it is such a big issue that they put a specific law in place to outlaw it. It's not as if it's some ancient arcane hidden sub clause. It was really high profile because they couldn't punish Leeds as they wanted because the law didn't exist. Trying to excuse them when caught is so typical of football.
