Just putting this out there as a heads up for everyone that maybe fancies saving a few quid at some point on the price of internet.

There has been quite a lot of new fibre laying activity I've noticed in Swansea this last couple of months, including myself at the top of Morriston, where my parents live in Gendros and relatives down on Peniel Green Road. Until now Virgin Media was my only option for decent internet, for that reason they screwed me on price at every renewal as they knew that I had no option to go anywhere else.

I saw the guys working on the telegraph poles on my street about 6 weeks ago and about the same time got a letter from https://www.netomnia.com/ - At first I thought the letter was junk, but it turns out that they're building out the UK fibre network along with Openreach.

Checked on their site and found I could have fibre to the premises, 1GB speed for £28 where I had been paying Virgin £58 for 500Mb. Got it installed about 3 weeks ago and it works great!

Might be woth checking if anything new is available where you live. Even if you're with Virgin and don't fancy moving you'll be in a much better position to get your price down at your next renewal, having an alternative you could threaten them with.

Not in my area yet, but someone else was telling me about this today.

Also to add here, when taking out a new contract (renewal or a new provider) then ask for a joining incentive. Most providers will offer you something like a £50 pre paid credit card to spend as you wish.

Just checked with Mrs Mute and this company was laying cable in our road a little while ago.
I just went on to the website and submitted my postcode and it said that “my address is currently not in scope” 🙄

Worth checking BT mate as I've seens loads of Openreach vans doing something too. If I go to the BT site the fastest I can get is 40 odd Mb, only decent alternative for me was Netomnia but you may be different. The other companies have really dragged their heels coming here because the Virgin network coverage is so strong around here but it seems finally we are to have decent alternatives at very decent prices.

Their website details are probably not up to date. They won’t show available until the install is complete. It’s not only the cable laying and fibre joints to do its building the exchange Infrastruicture for that area.

They probably have a let me know when available section you can complete. But they will send you a letter when ready. I had one a few weeks ago as they recently completed our estate.

I’m in contract with plusnet at the moment with fibre to the premises as they have been in the area a while, but will review costs closer to end of contract date. One thing to consider is what are they like to deal with when something goes wrong plusnet always quick to respond with tech staff you can understand. Some companies use overseas call centres and it can be challenging dealing with them.

They seem legit, but there are also a lot of complaints about them taking the easy option and installing new telegraph poles everywhere without any notice (I think Virgin are all buried).

They're not in my area unfortunately, I'm with Vodafone at moment, but need to find a cheaper deal, I've my Landline and Broadband with them.

I’m after a new broadband deal as my contract is up and I’m getting caned. My problem is that we don’t have great mobile coverage in the house and we need to retain the landline. Time to start looking in earnest.

Not sure if you are aware but landlines are being taken out of service by 2025 so you will need alternative option using a service called VOIP. You can retain your existing telephone number.

Depending on what mobile you have there is a feature called WIFI calling. This routes your mobile call over the internet rather than the mobile network. Most of the uk mobile networks support this. Just check on line for the feature for whatever phone you have and what network you use. So mobile coverage doesn’t matter then. You just enable/disable it as required on your phone
