We've lost one of the best overall players in the division in Ayew, one of the better defenders in the division in Guehi, seems like we've downgraded at keeper, sold our only other player who scored a decent amount of goals in Lowe, plus a fine player in Roberts.
Early returns on Piroe, Ntcham, Laird and Downes look good, but way too early to say it's a better squad than last season. Pretty much all our new signings/loans will have to be massive successes to make this a better squad.
Not that I agree with this 'Cooper underachieved' narrative mind. I think given his limitations as a manager, he did the best he could with us. Could another manager have done more? Maybe, but we'll never know, so why bother debating it? Just like I think we'd be worse off now with Cooper than we are with Martin, but I can't prove that, it's just my reading of the situation.
It’s going to play out over the season and I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes. However on paper and all things considered I think we are better off, both in terms of overall quality and balance.
I hope you're right and I'm wrong, because I think we could be in for a memorable season if you are.
