The English particularly seemed to favour the elbow to the head to try and stop Diego.

Not sure how Terry Fenwick stayed on the pitch, England got what they deserved in that match up which was nothing.

It was an assault on Diego, the English knew he was the John Charles, Pele of his day and they seemed to go out to try and take him out of the World cup.

We were talking about things like this on Twitter the other day.
You can only say it was GBH going by today’s much softer game and everyone thinks Tommy Smiths tackle on Ardiles was fantastic,he didn’t even get booked for it where as today it would probably be a straight red.

We were in the same hotel as the team back in 2000 or 2001 and we were having a drink with John Hollins,Alan Curtis and Richard Evans.
Hollins told a story that in one game for Chelsea some player came through the back of him hit home six foot in the air and had he was receiving treatment off the physio Ron Harris ran over and whispered in Hollins ear “don’t worry John leave him to me.”
Ten minutes later said player was being carried off on a stretcher.

Those fouls were over and above even for the era.

The English are about the worst when it comes to cheating (and moaning if on the odd occasion they suffer an injustice), 66 World cup was said by some to be systematic cheating across the tournament and not just an individual action in a single game, even that 86 game it seemed like preplanned by England to take Maradona out of the game from the off but thankfully for the game of football Maradona was one step ahead of the English.
