I mentioned in a thread a few weeks ago that I was interested in getting a dog (has to be hypoallergenic) but I'm hitting a brick wall

I'd really like a miniature Schnauzer but I'm open to other breeds (Bichon Frise and Cavapoo/Cockapoo were recommended)

I'd like to get it from a rescue centre ideally - I'm incessantly checking Many Tears - but the choice is very limited. Desirable dogs (young, trendy breeds etc.) seem to get snapped up within hours and are very rare to begin with, but the less desirable dogs (older, behaviour problems, health problems etc.) seem to bounce around for months, some even years. My problem is I've never owned a dog and don't think it would be sensible to take on one with known and established behavioural issues as a first dog. That means I'm fighting others for the younger dogs, but 99% of them aren't hypoallergenic either so I could be in for a very long wait

So I've looked on the sales market... But the prices have blown my mind. Pets4Homes suggest the average selling price for a mini Schnauzer is £941 for a KC registered dog, and £686 for a none KC registered dog, which I'm happy paying (https://www.pets4homes.co.uk/dog-breeds/miniature-schnauzer/)

But I can't find them for anywhere close to these prices. The Pets4Home sales page has them anywhere from £2,500 upwards which is more than I can spend

My sister bought a Chihuahua of some kind last year for £350 - they're now on Gumteee for £1,800+. Someone mentioned the prices sky rocketed because of lockdown and people wanting dogs as entertainment/to take for walks etc. - is this true?

Not sure where else to look really - I guess I need to be patient and see whether prices drop - but I'm hoping that someone knows a local breeder, possibly!?

Have you looked at Barney’s small breed rescue centre? I think they’re in Bridgend. My sister got a Yorkie from there. He’s lush. Just a thought.

Just keep looking mate, something will turn up one day, good things come the those who wait😉

It's important to do your research on what kind of dog suits you. We opted for a whippet as they need a couple of short high intensity walks a day and then spend the rest of the day sleeping and there appear to be not many health conditions associated with the breed.

Good luck with it all, having a dog suits us and it ensures that I get up early and get out and about no matter what the weather. I've also met a number of friends through being out with the dog.

Mate of mine just bought a Cavapoo for nearly 3 grand. Another paid a couple of grand for what I think is called a shitpoo.

Same with a beagle. Need to sleep 18 hours a day min, with a one or two daylight walks and a bit of playtime factored in they're great. If you keep them awake more than about and hour and a half they're horror bags.

James, is it a skin reaction or an asthma thing?

Asthma and eye/throat irritation mate

Thanks for advice so far, I'll take a closer look at links etc. after the football

Mont - my bedsit has rooms and a garden; it's what's called a house. Unfortunately unlike you I can't shit, check my emails and cook an omelette all at the same time

Yep, sounds about right. Fireboy said he paid £1,250 for his Cockapoo a few years back but I can't find them for cheaper than 2.8k at the moment. Prices seem to have gone insane

We have a Chihuahuas/Pomeranian cross for my daughter because she was allergic to the oils in other dogs fur/hair. We've had her 5 years now.
