He fails to recognise the point that this ‘amateur’ can climb back up the world rankings by beating players of a higher calibre. Higher world rankings = potential place on main tour. Murphy is coming across as a bit of a bell-whiff.

It was a stupid thing to say and appears that he’s forgotten where he came from. He was an amateur once and played better players to get where he has. The guy he played was previously on the tour and playing to get his ticket back, so obviously is playing for the money too. Sounds like a greedy child who couldn’t get his own way. He’ll regret saying that for sure. 🤫

He tried to qualify for the Open golf tournament as an amateur a few years ago the utter hypocrite.

Not really a hypocrite. You can qualify for the Open as an amateaur but you cannot enter the vast majority of golf tournaments unless you're a professional golfer.

Defending champion Neil Robertson was beaten today by an amateur, John Astley. Robertson was another who said, before he was beaten tbf, that amateurs should not be allowed to play.

As I understand it, his point is that there are places for about 6 amateur players in every tournament, who will always be the same people because they are the best amateurs so that they are getting a free ride, while the professionals have to qualify. This is his job and if professionals lose then it's taking money from their families, so it would be better to not have them in the tournament, and players can take byes into the next round if necessary.

Have I misunderstood him? Because to me, that's complete bollox for all of the reasons given above.

I think "Taking money from their families" is a slight exaggeration of a point really in fairness. Both Robertson and Murphy will be millionaires a few times over from their prize money and sponsorship

The professional players voted to allow the amateurs in, they need to be good enough to beat them rather than crying over a few lost quid here and there.

When they live in the real world (see the thread on the cinema and the poor lady who lost her home) then they can bleat about only picking up £5k instead of £10k for reaching the next round.

Self entitled people

I think that the top 128 professional players qualify automatically but because of some unable to travel to the UK due to COVID problems then the numbers have been made up by the top”amateurs”. Local lad Michael White was one of those this time as he had amassed enough points.

That's what he said in his interview with the BBC at about 00:35: "This is how I put food on my table". More than 250 years ago the great British economist Adam Smith wrote that whenever people form a group, then they will attempt to make it a monopoly, which is human and economic nature.

Not doubting he said it but into context - him losing in the 1st round is not going to have his family at home and starving is it?

The problem with professional snooker as I understand it is they want to restrict their tour numbers to 128 and create a closed shop. Another sport where greed has again taken over.

I read yesterday that they want to take the tour to America - is this to expend the reach of the game or because someone has a bit pot of money to through at it?

No sympathy for Murphy who has probably earned more in his short career than most of us will earn in a lifetime
