Ever since the first discussions came about regards Russell Martin’s move to Southampton there has been plenty of speculation about whether he would return to SA1 after his confirmed departure and take some of the key members of his squad. The initial discussions were very much about Matt Grimes but...

If as reported Southampton are interested in Downes, I can't see them getting Downes and Grimes.

If Downes says no then maybe Grimes could become a target again.

Fulton, from not wanted, to playing, and then a target for a move. Can't see it myself.

My get out comment

Football is a strange business. ;)

Downes is meant to be part of the Ward Prowse deal to West Ham I'm sure I read, would make sense.

Yes I did read that somewhere. If it happens I'd still be surprised if Grimes is then on the wanted list. Maybe other positions more important depending who stays or not.

I read about the JWP thing on Twitter earlier - question was asked if we have any clauses in the Downes one that could see us get a few £ as a result?

If Martin ever moves for Fulton it clearly shows what an inept tosser he is. Not to say that Fulton isn’t good enough, he is a class player, but Russ couldn’t see it and tried to ditch him before he had an awakening. Terrible team manger and terrible man manager.

Regardless of what happens with Duff I’ll never hanker back to the days of Russel Martin. File along with Steve Cooper.

I think Duff's football style will suit Fulton and can't see him leaving. Grimes is a possibility although is he prepared to uproot his family and go to Southampton where RM could well be sacked by Christmas

Maybe

But always a but.

If it's part of a package then, if it's a percentage of profit then I doubt, no chance.

I refer you to Vorm :D

Is Downes a realistic option for Southampton? He's a West Ham fan and they're probably losing Rice this window (although we've heard that before).

I thought the Fulton absence was a club decision to try and force him out due to his high wages?

After we realised fulton wasn't going to leave and the window came and went Fulton was reintegrated and regularly picked by Martin.

That last line is bang on, and should be heeded.

So the club told Martin who he could pick in his match day squad? that makes him even more of a tosser.

Sorry mate that makes no logical sense of any sort.

If you want someone on a fat contract to leave (and they are any good) you play them and put them in the shop window. They will want to bust a gut to impress. Leaving them out, when they can happily sit there and take the cash until they can walk on a bosman, forces them nowhere.

Well that depends on how much Fulton would have enjoyed/ tolerated earning no appearance/ goal bonuses/ fees for the 3 ish years remaining on his contract at the time and training with the kids etc. And as has been shown it was only ever an empty threat and Fulton bluffed them by sitting out the window and not taking lesser terms elsewhere. Lo and behold when it was obvious he wasn't going anywhere - he's back in the squad.

It wouldn't have been a policy id have employed either but the timeline adds up with the rumours/ reports that were around at the time.

Did he not come in to Martin's squad because Downes was sold, Smith left, and both Allen and Walsh started the season injured?
