An outside bet is George Russell, although on contract with Williams he's part of Mercedes' young driver programme.

George is a massive favourite of Hamilton, who he's tipped for F1 World Champion in the future.

Probably won't happen but I hope it does, it would be interesting to see how he compares to Bottas, Russell is a terrific driver.

Would like it to be Russell, I really rate him, although I think it’ll be Vandoorne or Gutierrez. Pointless having them as reserve drivers otherwise.

On the day his nomination as SPOTY was announced

Early move for the sympathy vote?*

*For the avoidance of doubt, this is not a serious post!

Hah.

Nailed on Marcus Rashford for that one no?

Russell to replace Hamilton this weekend, it'll be interesting to see how he goes up against Bottas

George Russell set the fastest time in P1 today ... 0.176 secs faster than Verstappen and 0.322 secs faster than Bottas, who was 4th!!

If George Russell fastest in qualifying wins the GP this weekend, does that not point to Lewis Hamilton not being the greatest driver but a man who drives the greatest car?

UPDATE: George Russell finished 9th.

To be fair, that was due to a pitstop f*ck up and a puncture - two things that held him back.

He was pretty much walking away with it otherwise. He looks to be a great talent though, I think there's a danger of 'non-F1' people thinking that some random British kid had sat in Hamilton's seat. Formula 2 champion and out-qualified his team mate in every single one of his races up until last weekend. One of those team mates being highly rated and experienced Robert Kubica (yes, I know about the injury).
