M32

I was in Bristol yesterday and travelled home today.

Firstly, the bad. The westbound carriageway on the Prince of Wales Bridge or whatever it’s called is being resurfaced and is down to 1 lane, this has resulted the east bound carriageway being reduced to 2 lanes heading east and a contra flow travelling west. The M49 heading North was reduced to 1 lane so there was a queue about 1.5 miles to join the M4 west bound.

The good news, the roadworks on the M4 between the junction for the M5 and the M32 have been concluded and the roads were clear and running freely yesterday. The M32 into Bristol was also running smoothly.

I was stuck on the M49 today queuing to get on the Severn Bridge, it took ages!

Cheers they should be doing resurfacing work over night!

I am astonished by the fact that someone chose to resurface the PoW bridge over the summer holiday season.

I know, I couldn’t believe it either, Highways England are responsible for the bridge so I guess they’re behind the work.

The M49 was part closed, there were cones everywhere and not a workman in sight. It was the same on the POW until we got half way across when we saw about 20 vans etc parked up workers nonchalantly bumbling around.

To be fair, I couldn't initially. My 3 adult kids swore by it so I have persevered and now that I also understand Android Auto in the car a bit better I wouldn't use anything else. AA has an added advantage in that it reads out WhatsApp messages to me and allows me to speak my reply.
I love Android Auto but my car doesn't have it but almost every car I've hired abroad in the last 3 years or so (except Bulgaria!) has it because they're usually quite new models (except Bulgaria :ROFLMAO: ).

I tried to get to grips with what 3 words and concluded it was a load of shit and went back to Google Maps.
What3Words is absolutely the best thing ever invented IMO especially when you are looking for places that have no address which I do quite a lot of especially abroad. Going back to using Google Maps instead is absolutely nuts because when you've located your destination in W3W, you just tap Navigate and then tap Google Maps so W3W finds the place you want more accurately than any other system out there but you actually use Google Maps to navigate to your destination because W3W is not a navigation system so I think you've rather missed the point there. A load of shit it most definitely is not and every time I go abroad these days, I have a piece if paper with maybe 6-8 W3W addresses on for just about everywhere I intend to go.

In the last week or so, I've given the W3W address for the 3m x 3m square immediately outside our front door to 2 different delivery people (Amazon & DPD) even though I have an address but it can be difficult to find and they both thanked me for doing so. I also use it for reporting fly-tipping on the Somerset Levels to our local council as fly-tippers tend not to use places with an address. It's also excellent for locating a specific entrance to huge buildings with multiple entrances like football stadia and large music venues. Trying to find the entrance to the car rental returns area at some airports is something that used to frustrate me quite a lot because they're not always well signposted but storing the W3W address before I leave can save so much time and frustration on my return. Nice airport was by far one of the worst but Madrid and Paris CDG are quite difficult too because of their size. Sofia would have been impossible as the entrance is down a ramp to basement level -4.

A few weeks ago my son was in Portugal and he sent me a WhatsApp message saying something like "When we went to Vale da Lama a few years ago, where did we park" I messaged him back "ovary.lifting.drummer". Job done.

Anyone got experience in using it on a weekend, off down to near Yeovil, but calling into a place near to M32 first so wondering if its better than M5 which can be a nightmare.?
M5 is quite unpredictable but I wouldn't use it if you're going on BH weekend. If you have to visit someone near M32, I think I'd then head for the A37 which goes all the way from Bristol to Yeovil and the biggest place it goes through is Shepton Mallet which isn't very big at all but I'd definitely use Google Maps to get through the eastern part of Bristol towards the A37 first.

Just took me an hour to get from Bristol M32 to Chepstow. Traffic solid on the M4, so managed to sneak off and nip through Tockington (nice little village...apart from the arseholes 'nipping' through 😆) . Otherwise I think I'd still be there. Combination of PoW bridge repairs and a breakdown on the old Bridge which has taken that to one lane too. The whole area is best avoided on a Friday.

Current picture at 15:40. Screw that, I’m much happier sat in the garden with a beer.
