• Thank you very much | Diolch yn fawr

All at JackArmy.net would like to thank everyone who has played a part on this site over the past 25 years whether that is through writing, contributing, moderating, posting or just visting and reading.

Without any of you the work that has gone into the site would have been pointless and we will always be proud that we built, generated and managed a community that was such a big part of the Swansea City supporting life for so long.

It has been a pleasure to bring to you the site for so long but the time is now right to turn the lights out for the last time but we do it both with a heavy heart and a sense of pride driven by the so many messages received since we announced the closure.

The site will remain here for a period until we archive and mothball it for the last time later this summer but all aspects are in a read only format.

Thank you though for all the memories

Swansea City have appointed Mark Allen as their new academy director.

Looks like a good appointment

Cardiff boy as well, which will drive them nuts down the M4

And Swansea have confirmed that Llanrumney-born Allen - who has previously held key roles at Man City and Rangers - will take charge of the club's youth system. Everyone at Man City and Rangers seem to speak highly of him.

MARK ALLEN APPOINTED SWANSEA CITY'S ACADEMY DIRECTOR

Swansea City is delighted to announce Mark Allen as the club’s new academy director.

The 57-year-old is appointed following Nigel Rees’ departure last month, and arrives with a wealth of knowledge and experience in British football.

Allen, who is based in Llanharan, spent eight years as Manchester City’s director of academy where he helped nurture the likes of Phil Foden and Jadon Sancho.

Most recently, he was director of football at Glasgow Rangers, where he was responsible for recruiting Steven Gerrard as their manager.

He starts his new role today, with Allen meeting staff at the Liberty Stadium and Landore this morning.

Swans chief executive Julian Winter was delighted with Allen’s appointment.

“In Mark, we believe we have someone who can continue to take the academy forward and help the development of our players and staff,” he said.

“We underwent an extensive process with a recruitment agency for this position, and we were delighted with the high-calibre candidates who were keen to work for our football cub.

“Mark was the outstanding choice. He has great experience in football and is familiar with the ethos here.

“He has a proven track record of working with young, talented footballers at Manchester City and preparing them for the first-team environment.

“His success at Glasgow Rangers also stood out, and his involvement there shows he is knowledgeable of the requirements and demands not just at academy level but at senior level too.

“It’s an exciting appointment, and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

Allen had looked set for a professional career in football, but was released by Swindon Town at the age of 19.

Following that, he earned a four-year scholarship with San Diego University, for whom he captained the football varsity team.

Allen returned to the UK in 1986 where he spent seven years with HTV and then 11 years with MTV, where he was appointed managing director.

After two-year spells each with Inside Out and Deluxe Digital, Allen joined Manchester City as the club’s director of academy.

Allen is also an Uefa ‘A’ licensed coach, and has recently gained a Masters in sports directorship at Salford University.

Looks a good appointment. Will be interesting to see how he operates with a lower category academy though

Was the downgrading of our academy status ever actually confirmed? Don't remember seeing it anywhere.

BBC reported it retrospectively last year, date of report is 2nd September.

Never been confirmed by the club though. They've been pretty open about stuff like this so It'd be unusual if they'd done it and not said anything.

The New Director has just confirmed it in his press release now

Beat me to it by seconds.

All our U23 games are now Professional Development League we have not been involved in the PL 2 since the start of the season. Nothing much has changed it would appear and we were champions of this league in 2014/15 before moving into PL 2 where we were champions a year or two later.

We probably cannot sign youth players/ children from outside the UK but other than that it seems pretty similar.

Brexit has stopped free movement of under 18s from the EU counties. It is expected that the value of young British talent will skyrocket.

From what I understand it now leaves us helpless in stopping our best young talent from being snapped up by Academy 1 clubs for basically a nominal fee.

Sounds like a promising and unsurprising move?
