What’s your take on this then?
I reckon you’re going to see a lot more of sports people refusing to do interviews now that this has happened and there’ll no doubt be twáts using it as an excuse too.

I'm bemused by the idea that interviews with the media are apparently so important to the fans (according to the French Open officials and the other tennis authorities).

How many people who watch live sport give a toss about the interviews afterwards? It's usually full of sportspeople saying nothing of any relevance, with occasional nonsense like the BBC reporter after the Wales v England game in the Six Nations and we very rarely have something interesting like Keegan's meltdown.

I’m not sure that’s correct,us grown up yes but the weirdos couldn’t live without them imo.

I assume that this is a contractual obligation that she is now stepping back from. If so then a fine is possibly justified although I did raise an eyebrow at the size of the figure. If it is contractual then she cannot really complain; not many of us get to pick which aspects of our jobs we do and don't do.

I agree Andy and that’s taking nothing away from people struggling.

You can argue it’s fair that she was fined as doing media is a contractual obligation as part of the Slams. I’d argue that it was an ideal opportunity for the Grand Slam four to show some empathy to a young player with a history of mental health issues who is far from the only player to complain about the treatment they get in these press conferences and set an example to sporting administrators on how to deal with the growing issue of mental ill health in elite sport. Players like Naomi Osaka will carry tennis on their backs long after the likes of Williams, Federer, Nadal et al are long gone if she sticks around and she deserved better than she got.

And as a general rule, if Piers Morgan thinks you’re a twat you’re probably doing the right thing.

For sure, the tennis governing bodies could also have handled this a little better than what they have done.

I’d be much stronger than that. They failed in their duty of care in almost every conceivable level.

Contract or not, if someone is suffering from anxiety (or any other mental health condition) over doing interviews, the last thing they should have done is kick up a big fuss over it in the media.

I've had a gutsful of people in this country, pretending to care about mental health, or organisations bleating in the media about how much money they have poured into supporting people. You try and get emergency mental health care for someone in serious danger, who hasn't been referred by a doctor. It's a f*cking shameful, and nobody can tell me any different. Hashtag mental health all they like, it stinks to high heaven.

Mental health aspect of the Health Service is significantly underfunded and has been for years I have had a few dealings with mental health services in a professional capacity over the the years and I have been completely underwhelmed. Completely and utterly shocking. The worst was CAHMS who deal with kids and adolescents, had some right barnies with them.

Marcus Trescothick coming back to me and a life too short about Robert Enke are 2 books people should read.

The post match interviews are a media thing in most instances, maybe players could opt to forfeit a small % of their prize money for not doing them, or their coach could do it.

Female Tennis players are often young compared to other professional athletes, Osaka is a 4 times GS winner at 23. Burn out is common. So they must be protected physically and mentally.

The master of the mental side, Alex Ferguson didn't allow interviews with the young Giggs and himself refused to do Motd interviews over another matter.

It may have made no difference, but if we had the choice between Gary Speed doing football focus or not, nobody now would be insisting he appear before the cameras

If I were earning the amount of money these top tennis players earn I do the post match interview bollock naked, if I had to.

The issue is bigger than post match interviews.

Is it, when you have the ability to become an elite athlete then you have to expect everything that comes with it, broadcasting rights cost billions to the broadcasters and make the player/players in the various sports rich beyond most peoples dreams.

Now here's the thing... if for whatever reason a certain individual doesn’t want to respect thier contractual obligation to the broadcasting authorities, then go do something else 👍
Get my drift.

I would have thought if she was that bad she wouldn't have been in the French open at all, she has 40 million but that's irrelevant , the press conferences are always full of idiots asking stupid questions and most players hate them, the post match on court interviews are the best , Jim courier and Sam smith handle them well , its a pity they aren't done at Wimbledon
