Local mexican food (and tequila) is to die for, I was lucky to do 14 days backpacking around the Mayan ruins
Sounds obvious but although the staples are nothing you havent heard of before (tacos, fajitas etc), you have to experience the real thing, mole is everything at meal time and range from blowing your head off to a sweetness overload.
The best meal I had was actually at this place

It's tucked away down a dirt track in Playa Del Carmen, the owner runs it as a means to fund social community projects to help troubled youth in the area.
