Piroe to miss key Burnley game?

Perhaps the only negative from the Swans’ rise up the Championship table has been Joel Piroe’s struggles in front of goal, netting only four all season. Not bad generally by striker standards in this division but for a player who netted 24 in his first season in English football it’s a drop off...

I would keep him in for this one. I think he's best suited to away games on current form.

Must be injured if he's to miss this particular game.

We certainly see the best of him when he’s plays up top! When Obafemi plays and Piroe drops deeper, it definitely affects his game. He needs to be in the box when we’re attacking, we know what he’s capable of when he gets the chance.

He scored more goals per game from #10 behind Obafemi last season. Created more too.

The last few games has definitively confirmed that unless Paterson is playing behind him Piroe has no business being upfront.

Did he really? I haven’t seen the stats, but I always thought he was non existent when he plays behind Obafemi! He didn’t score his first goal this season until Obafemi dropped out and Piroe went up top, now he’s on 4, so I would still argue that he’s better up top than playing behind a striker.

I was bored so I sat down and ran the numbers for last season on t'other site back in early Sep.

He had two goalscoring spurts. 13 scored in 23 games between 10th Aug and 8th Jan (0.56 goals per game). Then he went on a seven game dry spell which largely coincided with Paterson having a paddy during the transfer window. From then he scored eleven goals in 19 games between 5th Feb and 7th May (0.58 gpg).

The first game he played in behind Oba was, as far as I can tell, against Blackburn on Feb 5th. So, not only did Piroe score at a greater rate from #10 than #9, we gained Obafemi's goals too. Also 11 goals in 19 games. It's a marginal figure, but the fact that he could even equal his goal rate from deeper, never mind technically surpass it tells the story for me.

Besides, his overall game improved so much when he dropped into the #10 role IMO. To accommodate him up front means sacrificing Obafemi, and I don't think we're in a position to leave a forward of his calibre out, not when they've already proven that they can play together this way.

Fair play, I haven’t got the head to sit down and work out stats. I agree we’re a better side with both of them playing, and even though I now know the stats prove me wrong, Piroe always seemed to drift in and out of games when playing behind Oba. He obviously popped up with a lot more goals than I remember whilst perhaps not having a stand out performance.

I think if Piroe is going to play upfront you have to have Paterson, or at least someone very similar, for him to play off. As well as Cooper has done they haven't struck up anything like the same kind of understanding with each other. Without that kind of close support he often struggles.

Without that we're better off using Piroe as Obafemi's Paterson. Joel often dropped deeper when he was upfront anyway so I don't even think it's that big a positional sacrifice for him. Just this way he's perhaps not as isolated when he does it.

Piroe's versatility has also been his drawback.  To some he's an out-n-out 9, to others he's a 9.5 or even a 10. The reality is he's all of that.

When he first arrived he was asked :
- 'are you the CF Cooper has been yearning for, the missing link in his bid for promo.?'

His reply :
- 'I am a striker, I can play on my own upfront or deeper to build up play and strike '.  It's how he was coached from a young age.

This is maybe why Martin couldn't work him out initially, and ditched him and his #9 jersey.

I would now like to see him coached to be more ruthlessly selfish. For our sake, and his.

Excellent summary that fair play.

The main difference this season is that he has been half a beat slower to take his shots than last season, one of his biggest dangers was getting the ball just outside the box and fronting a defender because he was so good at making half a yard and finding the corners.

For whatever reason its not working out for him so far this season that way amd its affecting him when he is getting clear chances he is snatching at them a bit.

Form is temporary, class is permanent, take Salah at Liverpool for instance, been sluggish and out of sorts, then last night he exploded with a 6 minute hattrick, not saying Piroe will score a 6 minute hattrick, but he'll be back without a doubt.

When you take away say 60 seconds per goal for the restart, that's works out as a minute a goal for Salah

Welcome to the party

Agree with this. From my view, he's had far more easier and straightforward chances than last season so far this season. Last season he mostly made his own chances.

If he keeps working hard and getting in the positions I'm sure it'll click for him soon.
