Charlie Kelman, 18 years old and scored 7 goals last season for Southend, plays for the USA U20squad and will be loaned immediately to DC United.

Didn't think we had any money to buy players never mind buy players and loan them out to DC United.

Our of interest who owns DC United.

Whilst he is very young, he’s had 4 league goals in 11 starts in a struggling league one Southend side and we’re not exactly flush with strikers at the club...

Surely he could contribute in some way if signed for next season? By all means if we pull it together and sort out some balance in the squad re strikers in the next few weeks then good plan but seems strange right now.

If the loan to DC United is true then why would we do that ?

Swans pay the transfer fee, taking the risk on an 18 year old that may or may not make the grade as a Championship player.
DC United immediately take him off our hands to try him out in the arguably less competitive environment of MLS and at a modest loan fee.
If he makes it in MLS, DC United buy him for a small fee - a smaller fee than the Swans paid for him.
If he doesn't do the biz at DC United, he gets sent back to Swansea for us to deal with him, either to have a try at developing him in a Championship environment, or to sell him at a loss.
That way, Swans take the risk that DC United could get the benefits from.

If the loan to DC is true, then it strikes me a very smelly deal.

Because we are not under any circumstances being asset stripped.

Latest on this from Wales online is that our bid has been rejected, and Southend have responded by saying he's not for sale.

Wales online also confirming if he does come to the club, he will be immediately loaned out to DC United

Disgraceful.

Why don't we just cut out the middleman and buy players direct from DC United. There must be a few division 3 level players there they want to get rid of.

Not exactly but not much point Jake loaning us money to strengthen DC.

Unless that was the plan all along...

Apart from he’s a co-owner in another mls team. Not impressed by the deal itself but can’t see this being the reasoning

If it happens it will be a long overdue partnership IMO, especially since relegation means our academy players are not getting fewer challenges they need to prepare them to step into senior football.
Cons - difficulty keeping track of player development, less physical games.
Pros - regular first team football on good pitches where clogging is less likely, world class facilities to look after players.
Apparently Hispanic and Afro-American heritage players are not getting the chances they deserve beyond development level and could well be an untapped resource, alongside European heritage players particularly if Brexit favours US / UK reciprocation.
However, in this case we don't know if the suggestion is true; we don't know if the loan agreement would cover the player's wages and how much of any transfer fee.
If Kelman isn't expected to play for the señor side yet and is purchase for the future going to the USA could provide a higher level of football than loan to another L1 side and almost certainly reduce the overall cost to the club.
On the other had the Americans could be looking to use Swansea to buy players just like they didn't do with Wayne Rooney.
