The truth hurts

I doubt it would hurt at all. Trump already knows and is proud of it.

I think this is the key point.

Bannon is on record as saying something similar.

In reality Trump is giving permission for this to no longer be taboo and that's why many love him because they miss the old days when you could call a spade a spade.

Unfortunately driving racism underground (or misogyny or anything 'taboo') doesn't remove it from people's minds. It comes out at the ballot box. I feel really uncomfortable saying it as I'm the ultimate 'live and let live' guy but the approach to minority rights, whilst absolutely right and laudable, has two sides and can be used by the likes of Trump to ramp up hatred. The Dems were simply blind to the strength of the 'good ol' american bigot' vote. It's sickening.

Farage uses the same playbook, obviously, and the truly pathetic Bad Enoch is trying to latch on but is too stupid to even jump on board properly, and to see that UK is different to US, despite Brexshit, but what's worrying is we always follow in their shitstream.

100% I’ve been banging on about this stuff when it wasn’t fashionable.

There has been a sort of cancel culture. I absolutely agree with that and it hasnt been healthy.

There’s now a massive backlash that would never have happened if the left hadn’t gone down so many weird rabbit holes.

Ash Sarkar the Hard left Corbynista journalist has written a book on this and I think it’s very important actually. It’s been coming for years this and I’m annoyed it has been allowed to reach this climax.

Every pendulum of this sort always swings too far in the end. Now it's the 'free speech champions' of the right that are claiming to support free speech while totally shutting it down. Musk (and his army of lawyers) and his ilk are fine if it supports their point of view and ruthless when it doesn't. Trumps latest is to threaten to sue the NYT (I think), because they disagree with tariffs. And Bezos has directed the Washington Post (I think) opinion writers what opinions are acceptable! Wasn't that the investigative paper that outed Watergate when America was a more sensible nation?

Scary times we live in now.

Absolutely they were never truly about free speech. That is a dog whistle for Far right activity.

But this rhetoric and increasing online activism didn’t come out of a vacuum.

The right wing obviously inflate the “woke” stuff but a lot of the reaction is taking some truths and turning it into something massive.

The “safe spaces” for people who are “offended” by what someone says are not imagined they are prevalent and the whole pronouns thing which has been on a wild turn which makes even the most liberal find hard to keep up with.

The feeling of a lack of honesty on issues with immigration eg hotspots of high crime or disproportionate numbers related to certain groups just fuels more and more conspiracy theories which is a hotbed for the Far right.

The left should learn a lot of lessons and act on these learnings. Stop being offended over everything and respect when people have a different viewpoint.

And going back to the Ash Sarkar angle by the left splintering into all of these factions it has removed the collective element of left wing politics which fundamentally is the historic strength and how change actually happens.

I think we should be talking about “elements of the left” (and the same for the right to be fair about it, they aren’t all raving culture warrior racists. Just most of them) rather than labelling the entire spectrum. Otherwise there are many good points here.
