As he prepares to meet his former team mates next Saturday at Bramall Lane Britton has finally admitted that it was the former Swans boss that was a reason behind his decision to move on at the end of last season.
โItโs not as simple as just saying I should have stayed,โ Britton told Wales on Sunday
โItโs too easy just to look at the table and suggest would I should or shouldnโt have done.
โBut perhaps if there had been a different manager then it would have been a different situation.
โPaulo was manager when the new contract was in front of me and whether you are signing new deals or joining a new club, who the manager is influences your decision. That was the same with me.
โI wouldnโt say we fell out but it was a strange relationship,โ admits Britton.โHe didnโt talk to me at all about my contract and then he came out in the press and said what he said. Then he dropped me for the next game. Iโm not saying I was undroppable, far from it, but it was all very strange and probably made things more difficult for me.
โThings like that are always going to influence a decision like the one I had.
โItโs an open division and everyone knows that if you put a run together and go six or so games undefeated with a few wins then you can shoot right up the table,โ he said.
โSaying that, it works the other way and if you get stuck in a rut then you can really get dragged into things. So you have to be on your toes.
โBut we know we will be in for a tough game on Saturday and it will be a strange one for me.
โI will be lining up in the tunnel with lads I played with and in front of fans I know so well and who were so good to me for so long.
โWe have to take Swansea seriously because I know first-hand what a good side they are.โ
