“We’ll Sing On Our Own”

And tonight we can sing loud and proud as the Swans can consider themselves unlucky to leave Anfield with just a point in their pockets

At the start of the day there wouldn’t have been a Swans fan that wouldn’t have taken a point had it been offered and that should still be the case but it could so easily have been three as Swansea finally put some doubters minds to rest with a performance that more than made a mockery of their underdog status.

This was ‘little Swansea City’ at the home of the 18 time English and 5 time European Champions. ย  This was not just a day out to be enjoyed this was the day the Swans really came of age as they took the game to their illustrious opponents and had Mark Gower been slightly more composed in front of goal then it would have been one of the most famous victories in the club’s history.

To a man the Swans were heroes. ย Not a single performance stood out as they all played at the top of their game and – as Brendan promised they would – they played their natural game and made talent that cost 30 times more than what we paid look distinctly ordinary. ย  In Andy Carroll they have a player who cost more than the Liberty Stadium. ย In Suarez they have a player who cost more than our squad. ย  And then there is Jordan Henderson, Stewart Downing et al. ย  This was men against boys on paper but in reality it was the costlier side that looked like the boys.

Not many visiting sides will leave Anfield being clapped off by all sides of the Liverpool support but that is what happened to the Swans today and few could argue that they didn’t deserve such an accolade. ย And finally the media seemed to sit up and take notice that the Swans Premier League credentials are genuine and we are in this division for a reason. ย  A point further away from the relegation zone and on the back of a hugely impressive performance to boot.

Even without Scott Sinclair the Swans looked as dangerous as they can be and Wayne Routledge was simply brilliant himself at times – nearly setting up Graham in the first half as the Swans recovered from Andy Carroll’s laughable miss – what a waste of money – ten minutes into the game. ย He hit the ber when it looked easier to score but apart from a few late chances that was as good as Liverpool got.

Kenny Dalglish had warned before the game that his side would have to be patient as the Swans tended to pass the ball around and today they did that with a freedom that few will experience at Anfield. ย  Leon Britton, Joe Allen and Mark Gower cost less then a day’s wages for Charlie Adam but they were superior to him in every department as they controlled the midfield and surely Brendan Rodger’s prediction of international call ups for the likes of Nathan Dyer are completely accurate as he gave both full backs a torrid time in another excellent display. ย  ย Add in Routledge and Graham and you have six players that did everything asked of them – well bar score a goal anyway – in a near perfect performance.

Monk, Williams, Rangel and Taylor were what we have come to expect of them – committed to the cause and Monk and Williams in particular were making their ยฃ59m opposing strike force look less potent then something which, well isn’t very potent at all.

And in Michel Vorm we have the bargain of the season. ย  One of the top 5 keepers in the Premier League just 11 games in he was quiet for the most part but a couple of vital saves at the end ensured the point was the minimum return.

We will remember Gower firing over after brilliant work from Dyer and Graham but NOTHING should take away from an afternoon where – to some – Swansea City finally arrived on the Premier League stage but for most of us we got here some time ago and today is just a result in the waiting.

Bring on the Champions…
