“How many times have I said that?” – Russell Martin on the same issues

Russell Martin must feel himself that he sounds like a stuck record when talking about matches that the Swans have lost and last night was no different as he rued the Swans missed chances that he feels cost his side anything out of the Luton game.

A second half strike from Luton’s Harry Cornick proved to be the decisive moment of the game as the visitors left the Swansea.com stadium with all three points in their pocket and consigned the Swans to a second successive defeat and a third successive game without scoring.

It is now just two goals in the last five league games for Russell Martin and his side and came after the boss gave a rare start to Michael Obafemi in a bid to try and change things around.

The Swans now sit 19th in the Championship after that defeat and are starting to look a little nervously over their shoulders at the five teams below them, although there remains a 12-point gap between us and the bottom three.

Maybe not completely worrying times for the Swans boss but certainly concerning times as the strong form of October is nothing more than a distant memory off the back of 12 points from our last 12 outings.

The boss though continues to rue the missed chances in games where he believes his side is still the better team as he explained in his press conference after the game “We have to score when we are on top, how many times have I said that? Itโ€™s that little bit of quality in the final third.

โ€œMichael has a brilliant chance, Hannes has a brilliant chance and in another game or two that might have been another outcome as I thought he was great tonight, and Michael did well too.

โ€œBen Cabango hits the post from five yards out and Ryan Bennett missed the follow-up, and it means we are really disappointed.

โ€œI did not see many problems with the performance in general, they made it hard for us when we did not beat the press.

โ€œThe lads are giving us everything they have got, that is all you can ask. We limited them to very little, we had a lot of the ball but we have got to make more of it.

โ€œUnfortunately at the moment, it is not quite clicking in the final third and we concede such a poor goal. You cannot concede a goal like that.โ€

  1. As a loyal fan for over 50 years I feel that Levien & Kaplan are happy to see the club were they are with very little investment the players brought in are not experience enough to help the club in the Championship and all for wot Russell Martin talks about the buck stops with him surely there were far more experience managers the club could have gone for. We had a good manager in Cooper but he knew that there would be very little money coming in to the club so he decided to leave and take over to manage Nottingham forest and now look were they are compared to us the way things are going we could be facing relegation and I have to say this but Cardiff City have a stronger squad than us with the players they have brought in.it was a very sad day when one Huw Jenkins sold out to them two Americans they were so full of promises taken our club backwards they have .

  2. you were unlucky last night. cornick scored a good goal, but luck was on our side. i wish luton had some of your players, very skilful.can’t see you getting relegated.good luck.

  3. Sorry, Moonraker, but I disagree. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards, re-group, re-build and re-plan before you can move forward. We are in that place now. We would all like more investment, but we have to be realistic in this financially difficult, pandemic economy. We are financially sound and sustainable as a football club – that might not be a popular opinion and I await the abuse. We have to look โ€˜long-termโ€™ and build up the squad and coaches with young players, permanent signings and coaching experience. It takes time and patience.
Look at Blackburn, Luton and QPR last season and where they are now by sticking with their manager and plan.
Fans can be so fickle – last season we were 4th in the league and people moaned about Cooperโ€™s boring style!!! Back then, the style was more important, now it seems to be all about league position. We will NOT be relegated; this team has enough to prevent that, but the problem is that we we live in a world of Amaz@n Prime mentality- we want everything and want it now.
Do people really think Cardiff have a better squad and style? I know what Iโ€™d rather be watching and it has nothing to do with Lego.
Unfortunately, sport is superseded by money. Derby are in a mess, Bournemouth have just bought their place in the Premier League, but we are simply a financially sustainable business still playing in the Championship – we could be jealous of Bournemouth or we could be thankful for the relatively good position that we are in. With patience and a gradual build-up of playing resources we will be where Blackburn are in a season or so. But we will only do it with patience and by seeing the bigger picture than the league table.
Shouting โ€˜rubbishโ€™ and worse abuse at the players and manager will never help improve things. True supporters โ€˜supportโ€™ through thick and thin. Now is the time to support the team and coaches.

  4. Couldn’t agree less. It was a brilliant performance against a good side last night, from a Swans team that is looking increasingly confident (apart from the first half at Hull which was a disaster). We were unlucky not to beat Luton, who we restricted to breakaways for the most part. Wolf, Obafemi, Ntcham, Grimes were all excellent. Sure a bit more money would help to give us more depth. But let’s not knock these boys; they’re a good side. I enjoyed watching them last night.

  5. Codswallop Jack Carreg!
Every message off you is we cant boo and support the team.
Watching terrible defending and terrible management is not good.
Oh been watching the Swans for 60 years so I am
    allowed an opinion

    • The codswallop is yours Clive Everton. If you donโ€™t like watching the Swans, go somewhere else, thereโ€™s another team forty miles up the road, so you can boo the Swans to your heartโ€™s content – youโ€™ll like that (except that abuse is a crime)
You obviously know nothing about development in football, or you simply donโ€™t understand patience.
Perhaps RMโ€™s style and tactics are too complicated for you to understand.
Russell Martin has been truthful all along – like I say, if youโ€™re not happy, go and watch Man City, youโ€™ll be happy with their league position even if you know little about loyalty to your home city team. Perhaps you prefer Everton to Swansea, no probs, go and watch them, no one will miss you.
Okay, and hereโ€™s the big point, Mr Everton, it doesnโ€™t matter how long you have been following the Swans, you ARE entitled to an opinion, but you are most definitely NOT entitled to abuse the players or any other member of society – abuse is hate crime. You need to grow up and understand social conventions of the 21st century. Abuse is crime!!! You should be ashamed of yourself for admitting to being an abuser – booing IS verbal abuse. Did people boo you and shout abuse at you while you were working? I hope not.
Try supporting the team- encouragement brings better results than abuse. I await your abuse.

  6. What makes people think they have a right to be abusive? It doesnโ€™t matter how much you pay for your ticket, abuse is unacceptable.
We are all entitled to opinions, no problem with that, but abuse is not acceptable.
Try encouragement when things go wrong, that is when true support is needed. Abuse does not bring about improvement.
Are we 21st century people or Neanderthals?
When abuse was accepted in the 20th century the outcome was the Holocaust.
Abuse is unacceptable at every level. Being a football โ€œsupporterโ€ does not give you free-reign to be abusive – have your opinions by all means, but abuse is a hate crime.
