Matt Grimes has probably put to bed any further speculation on his future this window with the signing of a two year extension to his contract that will take him to 2027 and past his 32nd birthday.
The midfielder, who has more than 250 appearances under his belt for the club already is pretty much the first name on the teamsheet every week and has been for several seasons leading the side since his appointment as captain back in July 2019.
It had been fairly widely speculated that Southampton, following the appointment of Russell Martin, would make a move for Grimes but the former manager never came in for his former captain and this has led to Grimes talking, and now signing, terms on a new deal at the club.
The move will be a welcome boost to Michael Duff as he continues to build his squad and ahead of the last two weeks of the transfer window where he is expected to bring in at least two or three more players which will take his new addition count into double figures this summer.
