Luke Williams may be focused on the FA Cup tie at Bournemouth this evening but he still took some time out yesterday afternoon to address the latest questions on the January transfer which has now just a week to run until its closure.
Williams was clear in his statement that there is much work being done to ensure that the squad comes out of the window stronger than they went into it and also let slip that there could be some youngsters leaving over the next week to ensure that they get some game time as part of their development.
The Swans are yet to confirm a signing in the window which closes next Thursday at 11pm but both Williams and Andy Coleman have been clear in their statements that work is being done and that they are determined to bring in the right players that the Swans need and not just any old players to add numbers to the squad.
As Williams met with the media yesterday afternoon to talk about the FA Cup tie at Bournemouth, he was asked questions on the window and responded “I think it’s probably fair to say that the whole market is moving slowly. I’ve seen some impressive stuff from Andy Coleman, he’s not got his feet up I’ll put it that way.
“I think if you have a previous relationship with that player then these deals get done quickly because the player will say ‘I want to play with that person’. But if a player is moving to a club and he has options and doesn’t know any of the clubs or people at the clubs and just making this big leap of faith, I think they try to weigh up everything and then we have to do our best to be the most attractive proposition at the end of it all.
“It looks like it’s going to be a late flurry, so let’s see what happens. What I would say is even if it’s not what everyone was hoping for, it won’t be for the want of trying.
“what I think would be the second-worst thing is to bring people in that we don’t think are top-drawer, and then say ‘oh but we’ve done something’.
“I think that would also be a problem, we’d just be kicking the can down the road so we have to get the right ones and make them feel like this is the place for them to come and play.”
Williams spoke after the weekend defeat to Southampton about discussions to confirm a longer term deal for Yannick Bolaise and whilst he remains hopeful that he secures his signature he was candid as to exactly what is causing the delay adding that there was more to it than just the player being uncertain “It’s something along those lines,” the boss said. “It’s a little bit more complicated but if I talk more it’s probably unfair.
He’s not a kid, he’s an experienced guy, he has other options in his life. The first thing you have to know is that he’s training really well, he’s so focused and he’s really great in the building so this isn’t a commitment thing, he’s in a different stage of his career where these guys have to think about things more deeply. We’re trying (to get him to stay).
“Of course we’ve all seen a lot of Yannick over the years because he’s been a top player, so I’ve got a good impression of him anyway.”
