We gifted Leicester City goals – we need to keep our concentration

Luke Williams looked a frustrated man last night when he addressed the 3-1 defeat at Leicester City, a game in which the Swans appeared to compete for long periods of the game but paid for some poor defensive lapses.

After falling behind after just two minutes of the game, Williams must have feared the worst after the Swans had shipped three and five goals in their last two first half performances.

Leicester could easily have added to that lead inside the first twenty minutes of the game had they been a little more clinical in front of goal but the Swans seemed to gain confidence during that first half and arguably were the better side for the latter end of the half although it always seemed to be the home side that came closest to adding to the scoreline.

That pattern continued in the second half until some sloppy mistakes – two in two minutes – ended the game as a contest and left Joe Allen’s stoppage time goal to be no more than a consolation to bring back to South West Wales.

Addressing the questions of the media after the game, the Swans boss said โ€œWe were in the game for long spells but you have to be really clinical when your chances come against this team.ย  ย You canโ€™t give a gift, the first one is a fantastic action but was disappointing from our side.

โ€œThe second two goals for them we made the mistakes that you cannot afford to do against them.ย  The overall performance was not as disappointing as the scoreline.

โ€œI want us to try and be brave and start to try and play on the front foot more but you have to concentrate for the whole game and take your chances when they come and not give any gifts away.

โ€œWe have to learn to concentrate better and respect every single action.ย ย  The opposition showed us that they take care with every pass as the opposition showed us.ย ย  We want to build ourselves and compete and we need to learn from these really tough fixtures.

โ€œWe have to learn about the condition of the players โ€“ look at the last three teams and the way they focus and take care of every action properly.โ€

Williams has a chance to take on the latest of those lessons this weekend when Plymouth Argyle are the visitors to the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday – kick off is 3pm.
