Sheffield United have reportedly entered the race for Swans target Tyrese Campbell according to the Sun’s Alan Nixon this afternoon.
The former Stoke City forward is on the lookout for a new club after leaving the Bet365 Stadium earlier this summer and in theory would add Championship experience to Swansea’s frontline if a deal could be struck.
That is something that always seemed a challenge with Campbell recognised as an exciting target for many clubs at this level despite his struggles with injury; the fact he is available on a free transfer makes it a no brainer for many.
His wages would certainly be on the higher side of Swansea’s budget but as always with free transfers this is offset by the lack of purchase fee, balanced out with a larger signing-on fee to encourage the player down to SA1.
With the Blades now in the running along with West Brom and his old club Stoke, it seems a deal that might be too far away for the club and perhaps eyes should be looking elsewhere at other options.
“I know the player, most Championship coaches are going to be a big fan of the player,” Swans boss Luke Williams said after the 3-0 win against Rio Ave on Saturday.
“But he also has some very delicate circumstances at the moment that we need to be respectful of so I think itโs best not to talk about that too much at the moment.”
The transfer window still has over three weeks to go but with goals at Championship level at a premium in the Swans squad, it’s perhaps experience that is needed. But that often comes at a significant (and realistically unaffordable) cost.
After losing Jerry Yates (perhaps losing a bit strong?), Jamie Paterson and Jamal Lowe this summer – all with plenty of goals to their record at this level in the past – it’s a versatile forward that is needed with Zan Vipotnik and Liam Cullen the only senior striker options at Williams’ disposal.
The Swans kick-off the campaign at Middlesbrough in less than 48 hours time, 12:30 on Sautrday.
