Swansea City are set to complete the loan signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien as the man to fill the hole left by the departure of Matt Grimes at the end of last month.
The Swans appear to have reached an agreement with the high flying Forest to cover a proportion of his reported £40,000 per week wage and will bring him in before the transfer window closes tomorrow and having had to deflect late interest from Forest’s nearest rivals in Derby County.
O’Brien has struggled to have any real impact at Forest having made just eight starts in thirty months at the club and loan spells at DC United, Middlesbrough and Los Angeles have made up most of the last two years of his career but just forty-eight appearances in that time have been secured by the player.
Looking beyond that he was a very influential part of the Huddersfield squad that made the play off final in 2022, ranking highly for his defensive metrics across both duels wo and recoveries – data that will be music to the ears of Andy Coleman and his data analysts.
O’Brien’s loan to LA also included an option to buy but the MLS side decided not to pursue that and whilst Derby have shown recent interest there has also been suggestions that Preston, Blackburn and Luton have all been alerted to the possibility of a loan.
But it seems that despite all that interest the Swans are the ones set to secure a player who Forest still value at £5m despite his lack of football at the City Ground.
