Britton – It Was Paulo’s Fault I Left

As he prepares to meet his former team mates next Saturday at Bramall Lane Britton has finally admitted that it was the former Swans boss that was a reason behind his decision to move on at the end of last season.

โ€œItโ€™s not as simple as just saying I should have stayed,โ€ Britton told Wales on Sunday

โ€œItโ€™s too easy just to look at the table and suggest would I should or shouldnโ€™t have done.

โ€œBut perhaps if there had been a different manager then it would have been a different situation.

โ€œPaulo was manager when the new contract was in front of me and whether you are signing new deals or joining a new club, who the manager is influences your decision. That was the same with me.

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t say we fell out but it was a strange relationship,โ€ admits Britton.โ€œHe didnโ€™t talk to me at all about my contract and then he came out in the press and said what he said. Then he dropped me for the next game. Iโ€™m not saying I was undroppable, far from it, but it was all very strange and probably made things more difficult for me.

โ€œThings like that are always going to influence a decision like the one I had.

โ€œItโ€™s an open division and everyone knows that if you put a run together and go six or so games undefeated with a few wins then you can shoot right up the table,โ€ he said.

โ€œSaying that, it works the other way and if you get stuck in a rut then you can really get dragged into things. So you have to be on your toes.

โ€œBut we know we will be in for a tough game on Saturday and it will be a strange one for me.

โ€œI will be lining up in the tunnel with lads I played with and in front of fans I know so well and who were so good to me for so long.

โ€œWe have to take Swansea seriously because I know first-hand what a good side they are.โ€
