McBurnie would have been expelled after his first few performances, if he’d have ever got the chance. When we get a decent coach, he has to try the yoof. It’d help our payroll too, one or two always come off and simply can’t be worse than some of our bench or starters. We can’t compete for better players so have go untried…try our own untried!

I couldn’t fathom this one out at the time. We had shelled out some decent money for him (£400k springs to mind), he had just come off a decent season in League One and he was only 22. There were surely other options for the Yates deal.

Yates is doing well enough at Derby. Not prolific, but his all round performances have their supporters purring. When you chuck Whittaker into the mix as well, it becomes very obvious that some of the coaches we've appointed recently have dropped the ball massively when it comes to player development.

One of the major reasons I quite often defend both Vipotnik and Bianchini is because the manager who fucked up so badly when handling Yates is in charge of the pair of them.

Probably not a shock that the two worst examples, Martin and Williams, both come across as the type to put short term personal advancement ahead of long term benefit of the club that they're being paid to manage.

Often the incentives aren't there for managers/head coaches.

I'm not sure what the average period in charge is for Championship managers these days, with a few exceptions it's probably 18-24 months or so. There's little incentive for managers to prioritize youth development as they'll be gone before you see the fruits of it most of the time. It needs to be a priority from the top of the club, and managers when hired need to be told that it is part of their duties to play and develop youth, not just token gestures here and there. There are clubs that operate this way, it's not a pipe dream.

Managers are only a few results away from the sack most of the time, so if they have the option of signing a seasoned pro or develop youth, it's a no-brainer, give me the pro. ideally those decisions should be taken out of their hands to an extent.

All very fair and probably accurate. Maybe why I'm coming around to the idea of prioritising an older head when it comes to LW's (eventual) replacement rather than a young up and comer.

He did a decent job with the youth, hasn't really succeed elsewhere.

Remove the surname and you wouldn't give him a second thought.
