Trump 2.0

Can anyone with a better grasp of politics explain what he's doing to me?

I totally understand wanting to promote manufacturing and so on in your own country, that seems like a sensible thing to do in the long term. But that also seems to be something you have to lead up to, invest in production in your own countries, give companies a chance to prepare, not drop it on them like this.

I honestly can't see what the plan is, although the cynical side of me says that this in some way is lining his and his rich friends' pockets.

There is a televised speech out there somewhere where Reagan details the problems of tariffs.

In fact, 10 second search

It tells you all you want to know about Trump

Part of his MAGA plan is to reverse deindustrialisation, stop the flow of imports and create internal growth. Not many should argue against this strategy.

What’s not laid out clearly is his plan, as evidenced by the confusing and mixed messages. The not so intelligent part of the nation won’t see through this haze, hence the levels of support for him.

There is a lot of argument about whether his make in-house strategy can work, manufacturing and supply chains of today are entirely different to those of the 70’s. Cost competitiveness is not guaranteed. Based on the experiences of today, US industry is far from ready for this, the lower level tiers don’t exist yet and the tier 0’s won’t produce for fear of a sales slump. It’s a bit of a dogs dinner.

The Americans are heading towards their 'Tory' moment, when they realise they've voted into power the biggest arseh*le ever to draw breath, but they've got three and a half years of misery to endure first.
Good luck, you feckers.

There will be zero investment in the US to build any production capacity in the world he's creating, and he doesn't have any idea what he's doing beyond trying to bully the rest of the world to buy expensive and unregulated American shit.

Tariffs don't work even if you have the capacity to be self sufficient, they certainly won't work without, except as a lever to beggar their trade partners and force them to kowtow. Which is probably what it's really all about, publicly bend the knee to the great genius Trump, even though he is and has always been a thick arsehole. A biographer reckons it goes back to his childhood where if he didn't 'win' he felt ripped off. The parents and teachers of people like him and Johnno have a lot to answer for. People inventing cleverer justifications are probably overestimating things. Occam's razor says he's a venal, self obsessed, narcissistic, misogynistic, racist, entitled, thick twat, and that explains all he does.

Oh, the higher prices in America will increase the tax take, so allow more tax cuts for billionaires, and him, so that's handy.

Things are going to get very interesting for sure, I have watched a couple of tariff analysis on Twitter, and some people are suggesting Trump is playing a blinder? The videos I have seen basically in a nutshell, explain like it may look bad first of all, but in the future it will be good for America.

And BTW this is not meant to troll anybody, I can see what's happening currently, these analysts are talking what happens many moves in advance.

Steve there must be someone who is willing to get paid a big wad to eliminate the problem
Well when the US economy falls flat on its face because of what he's doing, he's gonna need a bulletproof suit of armour, I can't believe that the US constitution is allowing the orange faced clown to do what he's doing.

They can't produce all that they import, so he's cutting his nose off to spite his fat face.

Well Margret killed our manufacturing industry and its still going on, Tata have had billions off our governments and have still killed the Steel Works in Port Talbot, putting thousands of skilled well paid employees out of work.
Scunthorpe is closing now apparently.

Just at a time when we are gonna need quality steel to serve our military needs. The Chinese and Indians owned our steel making industry who are massive allies of Russia and the our Government current and previous have stood by and let this happen, fucking clueless buffoons.

There’s such a myth about manufacturing dying in 80s. It’s simply not true.

Manufacturing grew but at much slower pace than services.

All advanced economies have moved up the value chain which has meant an increase in services as a proportion of the economy.

High-tech manufacturing is a strong area for the UK eg aerospace, pharmaceuticals

It’s the same across the west. The more labour intensive old cheap labour has yes moved largely overseas and jobs have been lost due to robotics which is only going to increase.

So this idea that by having tariffs we’re going to have a load of manufacturing jobs eg textiles coming back to “home” is for the birds. Unless we’re willing to dramatically change our living standards. But how many times do the people who complain about this stuff buy cheap foreign crap? It’s not just Governments it’s individual choices.

Tariffs harm everyone, especially in a modern global economy.

What so many of his supporters don't seem to understand is that tariffs are a type of tax on imports that are paid by the people who buy them, not by the foreign company. In other words they will be paid by the American people.

It's not accidental that it will drive prices up because that's what it's meant to do. Sure, that will change if the American public switch to US alternatives but quite often there aren't any. If you want tatty clothes or toys for Xmas then they all come from China. That's why I don't want Starmer to retaliate on taxes because it would be the British people who would pay them.

It'll be interesting what the King of investing i.e. Warren Buffet will say at both his annual shareholder presentation and the open-mic question and answer session to 'Berkshire Hathaway' shareholders on May 3rd.
This is 'THE' guy who has seen it all from WW2 onwards, when he started investing as an 11 year to become a 94 year old with an accumulated $167.6 Billion fortune. This guys opinion(s) are the most valid of the lot.

Well he got out of the market into cash as soon as Trump was elected according to someone on you tube yesterday.
