Seriously dumb idea. The law as it stands is easy to understand for players and spectators alike. With this amendment how will defenders know where to stand in relation to attackers? I can see players dangling a leg at free kicks to be onside but beyond defenders. It may result in more goals, but at a big cost to the spectacle. If goals are random and not a consequence of skill then the game is devalued. Surprised Wenger is behind this. I would have expected better.

Na the existing rule is awful. Giving offside because your hand or finger is beyond the last defender is absolutely nonsense. You can’t score with your hand for a start.

Abolish offside altogether.
Its how it used to be
These days when so much of the game is about the middle of the park and controlling the midfield I don't think that the goal poachers of yesteryear will suddenly make a come back

That said I agree with the OP, it would lead to some weird interactions with players sticking legs out at odd angles to stay onside, though in fairness that might be compensated with how much impetus that player would lose should a ball be played since they are not in a proper running position

You literally have to draw the line somewhere. There is something in discounting arms. In fact, simplifying things by only considering the torso might be an improvement. But regardless of the tweaks there will always be lines drawn with VAR, and there will always be highly marginal decisions.

I thought that was already the rule? Only parts of the body you can play the ball with count?

In the image in the article, the attacker in white was offside because his foot was fractionally ahead of the defender's knee. If hands were taken into account, the defenders' hand would have played him onside.

This is exactly the correct answer.

When did that happen? Not that I watch a great deal of premier league games mind.

No, your arm cannot be offside in UK football. The offside rule in football considers a player in an offside position if any part of their head, body, or feet (excluding arms and hands) is in the opponent's half of the field and is closer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last opponent. The hands and arms are not included in this determination.

It’s amazing how many don’t understand the rules. And Wenger’s suggested change would be no harder to understand/interpret than the current laws of the game.
