Welsh Regions

What is the logic for sacrificing the Ospreys over the Dragons? I have not seen the argument, hence the question.

Dragons cover the East, own their own ground, got very good backers. Not that it needs any logic with the WRU mind.

If folk look beyond the fact that they have won less then ten games in three years then it sort of makes sense.

No real logic. Cardiff should actually go, as they are bust, being baled out by the WRU so it’s zero cost, but that’s never going to happen. Dragons are a pile of shite, even most Newport folk hate them, as they want them called Newport.

It’s possible a Swansea - sorry Ospreys - Llanelli - sorry, Scarlets, merger is more likely. Playing out of Llanelli as they already have the ground.

It doesn’t make any more sense than the West really. Newport 10 miles from Cardiff, Llanelli 10 miles from Swansea. Cardiff and Swansea the biggest population centres…not that it matters as Welsh Rugby is dying and ‘regions’ are already just about stone dead. There’s no audience. The WRU again turned down any chance of joining the English leagues. The real death knell was when the WRU turned down entry into English for Swansea, Cardiff and two others in the 90s. The arseholes insisted on 9 ffs and were told to naff off, and did.

Agree re Cardiff, it will never happen. The argument for protecting the Dragons will also be that their performance should improve when they get a bigger share of the pie. Merging Scarlets and Ospreys, oof!

Self harm has always been a characteristic of Welsh rugby governance.

The only way to make the economics work would be to seize on the discord between English pro rugby camps (will relegation/ promotion ever be reinstated? Is the bar to entering the top league too high?) and propose to merge the four Welsh regions into the top two English leagues. That would add huge value to the Welsh regions IMO. I don’t think that’s an impossible outcome but there are so many entrenched positions …

Downturn Abi has already turned that option down for 3 Welsh Regions, insisting we keep 4. Now she wants 3. She hasn’t a clue what she is doing, totally out of her civil servant depth, as is the bumbling accountant chairman. Welsh rugby is now an embarrassment.

Scrap them all and put the funding back into the premiership clubs

Come back in 10 years when it's thriving and try get representation in a decent league

The WRU is desperate to refinance its debt and the number one strategy is to completely alienate the huge support from the west.
