Not that we were ever likely to overturn the goal difference but we’re going to need Belgium to drop points somewhere else as well as beating them in Cardiff now.

Our biggest problem right now is the lack of goal difference, both Belgium and North Macedonia have racked up huge scores against Kazakhstan and Lichtenstein while we only picked up 1 or 2 goal winning margins

Beating Belgium would be great, but it really comes down to the double header in November (as long as Belgium beat North Macedonia in October).

It goes without saying we have to beat Liechtenstein and then as long as we beat North Macedonia at home, we finish second and have a home playoff match against a theoretically weaker team.

How demoralising to see us top the table on Thursday, only to then be suddenly demoted to 3rd courtesy of a 1/2 combination of quick fire goals from Belgium.

I didn’t see Kazakhstan coming back from a 2 goal deficit and, as I feared, that goal tally rose unabated in the 2nd half for the Belgiums.

The next clash we have with them will be a gargantuan contest which, I feel, is a must win match to keep our hopes alive for getting to the World Cup.

Only racking up the points will do now as I can’t see us pipping them or Macedonia to the post on goal difference.

The question is, have we got enough firepower under the bonnet of this team to beat a team that put 4 past us in June and subsequently put 6 past both Lichtenstein and Kazakhstan?

It’s always good to keep the faith, but that faith will be severely tested come 13th October.

No ifs, no buts. I'm expecting to lose by 2 to 3 goals in October but I've taken a day off and I'll be there.

The journey is what I'm partaking in.

Wouldn't we still get a playoff, even if we finished third due to our nations league performance?

Correct. However as I understand it we wouldn't be one of the seeded teams meaning our draw is potentially much more difficult

Yep, although we'd get a better seeding if we finish second as baka has said. I'm bemused by people thinking the game against Belgium is make or break, we'd probably not finish top of the group even if we win that game. The biggest thing a win would do is give us breathing room for second place ahead of North Macedonia, as long as Belgium beat them.

The real make or break game is the final one against NM, as we're likely to go into it needing a win to finish second, while they will probably only need a point to stay ahead of us.

100% this.

And the difference between a playoff place from finishing second, where we’d be in pot 2 at worst (probably pot 1) and avoid any big hitters that don’t win their group - and a playoff place via the Nations league where we’d be in pot 4 and away to one of the top seeds is massive.

Getting a home draw again in the final is 50-50 (hopefully we get luck of the draw for the 3rd time in a row!)
